"Depression: Frozen in a Spiral of Pain" - An author's illustration at the intersection of medicine and symbolism by a psychiatrist and artist. The work conveys the essence of classical depression through visual language, revealing its three key symptoms: hypothymia (low mood), motor retardation and ideator retardation.
The central figure is the embodiment of depression itself. In her chest is a gaping black hole filled with emotional pain into which tears flow, turning into an ocean of misery. This image symbolises the complete immersion of the psyche into a tormented state.
The background of the illustration is the spiral of a snail's shell, reflecting the slowness and lethargy characteristic of a depressive episode. There are tenacious tourniquets stretching from it, braiding the legs, expressing heaviness and stiffness of movement, and the web connected to the head symbolises slow thinking and confusion.
In the background is the cyclical change of day and night:
* The sharp-toothed sun represents the anxious morning hours,
* The weeping moon reflects the evening improvements - the characteristic diurnal mood swings of depression.
The ice around reinforces feelings of inner emptiness and loss of warmth.
The knife blade hints at the suicidal thoughts that often accompany severe depression.
And the thorns radiating from the chest convey inner tension and irritability - often hidden symptoms.

Nolan Trace is a psychiatrist and self-taught artist working at the intersection of medical illustration and surrealism. His project, “Atlas of Madness,” is a visual dossier on mental disorders, created based on real clinical experience and scientific literature. It is not stylization or fantasy but an accurate visualization of destructive mental states. In his practice, he uses alcohol-based markers and fineliners on watercolor paper, achieving maximum expressiveness and analytical clarity. Each image is accompanied by a detailed description — both scientific and artistic. His goal is to bring mental illnesses out of the shadows, break stereotypes, and show them as they are felt from within. Nolan creates works that shock and provoke reflection.
