On October 29, 2024, Ukraine will commemorate the 80th anniversary of liberation from Nazi invaders. In that tragic period of our history, the eminent graphic artist Derehus Mykhailo created the etching "Traces of Fascism" as part of his famous series "On Native Soil" in 1943.
This work of art is imbued with the spirit of its time, embodying the horrors of war and the resilience of the Ukrainian people in the fight for freedom. In his etching, Derehus captured the traces of destruction left by fascist invaders, emphasizing the mercilessness of the enemy and the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people.
Every stroke of his drawing, every penstroke, like the brush of a virtuoso conductor, is aimed at conveying deep feelings and emotions. This piece is not only art but also a visual chronicle, narrating the heroism and suffering experienced by our country in those dark years.
When we speak of great artists, we also recall their prophetic vision of the future. Derehus, embodying the spirit of his time, created a work that became a testament to history. He could never have anticipated that his native Ukraine would face a new challenge in 2022-2024.
The great Ukrainian graphic artist Derehus, who depicted the horrors of that war in his works, would be deeply disturbed if he knew the horror awaiting his homeland in 2022, 2023, and 2024! Furthermore, as the author of an exhibition of visual arts of the Ukrainian SSR dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine with Russia, held in Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery (1954), he would not believe that this time, the role of invaders, killers, and rapists would be played by the Russian regime, globally known as "Rashism."
Today, in years that will forever be etched in history as a time of new trials and the struggle for independence, Derehus's etching remains an important reminder of the value of freedom and the necessity to defend our homeland. As Ukrainians united in voice, we continue to write history, becoming heirs to the indomitable will embodied in the works of great masters like Derehus Mykhailo.

Mykhailo Hordiiovych Derehus is among those Ukrainian artists whose creative work defines and shapes the face of visual arts in Ukraine as a whole. He occupies a distinct place characterized by the traits of originality and uniqueness of talent.
He is a Ukrainian graphic artist, painter, and educator. He has been a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR and the Union of Artists of Ukraine since 1938. He became a corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR in 1958 and a corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine in 1996. Since 1995, he has been a professor at the Ukrainian Academy of Arts. He was also a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR of the 5th convocation. He is the father of sculptor Nataliia Derehus and artist Viktoriia-Marina Derehus.
Mykhailo Derehus was born on December 5, 1904, in the village of Veseloye in Kharkiv Oblast. It was in Bogodukhiv (Kharkiv Oblast) and in gymnasium that he began to learn to draw.
In 1925, he enrolled in the painting faculty of the newly established Kharkiv Art Institute. At that time, the Kharkiv Art Institute brought together a strong group of teachers in the field of realistic art, who had significant experience in teaching drawing and painting.
Among the instructors of Ukrainian disciplines was O. Kokel (1880-1956), a student of D. Kardovsky at the Academy of Arts, who taught drawing. Another student of D. Kardovsky, Professor M. Sharonov (1887-1957), taught students the culture of realistic drawing. Instructor S. Prokhorov (1871-1942) had studied under Ilya Repin at the Academy of Arts.
During those years, the prominent Ukrainian landscape painter M. Burachek (1871-1942) also began his pedagogical work at the Kharkiv Art Institute. Professor Burachek contributed to the development of coloristic talent in Mykhailo Derehus and many other students.
The Kharkiv Art Institute provided Derehus with professional training, particularly in painting, which always attracted him more than drawing. This institute laid the foundations for Derehus as a future artist and graphic designer.
In 1930, the artist graduated from the institute as a painter and embarked on the path of independent creative work.
After World War II, the distinguished Ukrainian artist moved to Kyiv, where he lived and worked until his death.
Mykhailo Derehus passed away on July 31, 1997.
Mykhailo Derehus' creativity spans a wide range. Starting his career as a painter, he later became one of the leading Ukrainian graphic artists, yet he never abandoned painting until the last day of his life.
Derehus successfully worked in thematic painting, landscape and still life, as well as portraiture.
However, perhaps his greatest contribution to Ukrainian visual arts is seen in the field of graphic arts, particularly in printmaking, predominantly etching, and book illustration.
