Είτε τέχνη του δρόμου, είτε urban art είτε γκράφιτι, αυτές οι νέες καλλιτεχνικές τάσεις έχουν καθιερωθεί εδώ και αρκετές δεκαετίες σε όλες τις μεγάλες πόλεις: από τη Νέα Υόρκη στο Παρίσι ή από το Λονδίνο στο Τόκιο μέσω του Ρίο. του Τζανέιρο. Καταρχάς, η χρήση της λέξης «Street art» είναι σχετικά πρόσφατη. Χρονολογείται από τη δεκαετία του 2000. Χρησιμοποιήθηκε το 2006 στις πρώτες δημοπρασίες τέχνης που αντιπροσώπευαν έργα από αυτό το καλλιτεχνικό κίνημα. Το 2008 η έκθεση «street art» στην Tate Modern του Λονδίνου επέβαλε αυτόν τον όρο για να περιγράψει αυτό το νέο μοναδικό καλλιτεχνικό κίνημα που χαρακτηρίζεται από μεγάλη ποικιλία στυλ (γκράφιτι, κολάζ, στένσιλ, εγκαταστάσεις, νωπογραφίες, μωσαϊκά, αυτοκόλλητα...)
Θα μπορούσατε να πείτε ότι είναι ένα παγκόσμιο κίνημα τέχνης που ξεκίνησε τη δεκαετία του 1960 και εξακολουθεί να ζει σήμερα. Η ποικιλομορφία των μέσων που χρησιμοποιούνται, τα στυλ, οι τεχνικές και η ελευθερία δημιουργίας στον δημόσιο χώρο. Είναι ένα νέο κίνημα που μπήκε στην ιστορία της τέχνης.
Ίχνη τέχνης έχουν βρεθεί στους τοίχους από αμνημονεύτων χρόνων. Είτε πρόκειται για βρεγματική τέχνη στα σπήλαια του Lascaux, είτε για ονόματα που βρίσκονται στους τοίχους της Πομπηίας, η τέχνη του σχεδίου και του γκράφιτι στον δημόσιο χώρο βρίσκεται ανά πάσα στιγμή. Αυτό που ονομάζεται street art σήμερα δεν είναι επομένως εντελώς νέο.
Στη Γαλλία της δεκαετίας του 1930, ο καλλιτέχνης Brassaï, που ενδιαφέρεται για τα γκράφιτι, αποφάσισε να τα φωτογραφίσει για να τα απομνημονεύσει σε φωτογραφίες. Στη δεκαετία του 1950, ο Jacques Villeglé (1926-) και ο Raymond Hains ανακάλυψαν αφίσες από το δρόμο για να αναδημιουργήσουν ένα έργο τέχνης με αυτά τα κομμένα κομμάτια αφίσας. Έθεσαν έτσι τα πρώτα θεμέλια αυτού που αργότερα θα γίνει street art. Την ίδια περίοδο ο Gérard Zlotykamien (1940-), το 1963, άρχισε να ζωγραφίζει μαύρες και κόκκινες σιλουέτες στο δρόμο που θα αποκαλούσε «εφήμερα». Θα συνεχίσει να ζωγραφίζει τις σιλουέτες του για αρκετά χρόνια.
Αυτό το θέμα των σιλουετών και η χρήση της βαφής με σπρέι είναι επίσης σημαντικά στο έργο του Ernest Pignon-Ernest (1942-). Οι σιλουέτες του με στένσιλ και ζωγραφισμένες στους τοίχους είναι η υπογραφή του. Θα εισβάλει σε ορισμένα μέρη και τοίχους με τις δημιουργίες του όπως οι σημερινοί καλλιτέχνες γκράφιτι.
Στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1960, στη Φιλαδέλφεια (Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες), ο πρώτος από τους «γραφητές» ήταν ο καλλιτέχνης Cornbread, ο οποίος έγραφε την υπογραφή του παντού. Αυτή είναι η γέννηση των πρώτων ετικετών: Κεφαλαία γράμματα φτιαγμένα με σπρέι αεροζόλ. Πολλοί νέοι ακολουθούν το παράδειγμά τους και θα κολλήσουν το όνομά τους στους τοίχους.
Το 1969, ο Julio 204, στη Νέα Υόρκη, είναι ένας από τους πρώτους που έκανε ετικέτα στην πόλη, είναι επίσης ο πρώτος που πρόσθεσε τον αριθμό της οδού του στην υπογραφή του. Φαινόμενο που θα γίνει ο δείκτης του κινήματος της Νέας Υόρκης. Ο Taki 183 είναι πραγματικά ο πρώτος tagger που έγινε γνωστός στην πόλη, καλύπτοντας τοίχους και τρένα του μετρό με τις υπογραφές του.
Αντιμέτωποι με την αύξηση του αριθμού των καλλιτεχνών γκράφιτι, οι καλλιτέχνες αρχίζουν να επιδιώκουν να διαφοροποιηθούν. Το Stay High 149 είναι το πρώτο που πρόσθεσε γραφικά στοιχεία στην υπογραφή του διπλασιάζοντας την ετικέτα του και προσθέτοντας το φωτοστέφανο που είναι ορατό στη σειρά Le Saint. Ακολουθώντας αυτό πολλοί καλλιτέχνες γκράφιτι θα ακολουθήσουν το παράδειγμά του και το στυλ θα γίνεται όλο και πιο ευρηματικό. Η Φάση 2 είναι ο εξαιρετικός καλλιτέχνης που θα τροποποιήσει την ετικέτα δημιουργώντας όλο και πιο πρωτότυπα σχήματα γραμμάτων και τελειώνοντας τη σύνθεσή της με ένα βέλος.
Ο παραγωγός καλλιτέχνης Seen στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1970 παρήγαγε έργα σε φωτεινά, αντίθετα χρώματα, ενώ ο Blade δούλευε πάνω στην προοπτική και τη γεωμετρία στο έργο του. Είναι από τους πρώτους καλλιτέχνες που εντόπισε γκαλερί και έκανε την πρώτη του έκθεση.
Το στυλ εξελίσσεται όλο και περισσότερο, μερικές φορές απομακρύνεται από το αρχικό γκράφιτι. Το πραγματικό κυνήγι που καθοδηγείται από τις αρχές εναντίον των καλλιτεχνών που σημαδεύουν τις πόρτες και τα βαγόνια του μετρό εντείνεται, οι καλλιτέχνες αναγκάζονται να διπλασιάσουν την εφευρετικότητά τους στη δουλειά με το να είναι όλο και πιο γρήγοροι στη δουλειά τους και στη δημιουργικότητά τους για να μπορούν να ξεχωρίζουν από άλλους καλλιτέχνες . Αυτό θα οδηγήσει επίσης σε αλλαγή τόπου για την εργασία τους και αύξηση των τοίχων ως υποστήριξη για τα επιτεύγματά τους. Η εξέλιξη του εργαλείου εργασίας τους το αεροζόλ μπορεί να εξελίσσεται. Εμφανίζονται πολλά χρώματα και οι άκρες ψεκασμού επιτρέπουν στους καλλιτέχνες μια ποικιλία πάχους γραμμής.
Οι καλλιτέχνες Futura, Dondi White, Rammellzee ή A-One ήταν οι κορυφαίοι καλλιτέχνες στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1979 και στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980 στις ΗΠΑ. Είναι και οι πρώτοι που δίνουν λίγο πολύ πολιτικό μήνυμα στο έργο τους. Από το 1979 οι χώροι τέχνης και οι εναλλακτικές γκαλερί ενδιαφέρονται και εκθέτουν καλλιτέχνες της τέχνης του δρόμου. Η επιτυχία έγινε διεθνής και από τη δεκαετία του 1980 οι καλλιτέχνες Blade, Futura ή Seen εξέθεταν σε πολλές εκθέσεις στην Ευρώπη. Ευρωπαϊκά μουσεία όπως το μουσείο Boijmans Van Beuningen στο Ρότερνταμ θα αποκτήσουν έργα τέχνης του δρόμου. Με τις εκθέσεις και την ανακάλυψη της τέχνης του δρόμου μέσα από τα ταξίδια, από το 1983 και το 1984, το φαινόμενο εξαπλώθηκε στην Ευρώπη (Γαλλία, Ιταλία, Γερμανία...)
Στο Παρίσι, ο πρώτος γνωστός καλλιτέχνης γκράφιτι είναι ο Bando που εισάγει γκράφιτι στη Γαλλία και ενώνεται με τους καλλιτέχνες Blek le Rat και Jérôme Mesnager που κάνουν στένσιλ σε καλλιτέχνες χρησιμοποιώντας αστικά στηρίγματα.
Οι τραυλικές απαρχές του παριζιάνικου γκράφιτι συγκεντρώνονται στις όχθες του Σηκουάνα μεταξύ του Pont Neuf και του Pont de la Concorde. Οι ανταλλαγές μεταξύ Ευρωπαίων καλλιτεχνών εντείνονται. Ο Άγγλος καλλιτέχνης Mode 2 θα συνεργαστεί έτσι στο Παρίσι με τον Bando ο οποίος στη συνέχεια θα συνεργαστεί με τον Ολλανδό Sho. Οι ανταλλαγές εντείνονται και με βορειοαμερικανούς καλλιτέχνες όπως ο JonOne που συνάντησε τον Bando στη Νέα Υόρκη, πρόκειται να του δείξει τι γίνεται στο Παρίσι. Στη συνέχεια, ο JonOne έρχεται στο Παρίσι, μετά γίνεται μέλος του Bad Boy Crew (BBC) και καταλήγει να μείνει μόνιμα στη γαλλική πρωτεύουσα. Ο JonOne θα διαφοροποιηθεί από τους άλλους καλλιτέχνες εστιάζοντας στην κίνηση και όχι στα γράμματα. Στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1990, το BBC έκανε εκθέσεις σε όλη την Ευρώπη.
Αν μέχρι τώρα η τέχνη του δρόμου ήταν ουσιαστικά μια τεχνική tagging, από τη δεκαετία του 1990 η αστική τέχνη θα γνωρίσει μια μικρή επανάσταση. Μερικοί καλλιτέχνες θα αντικαταστήσουν την υπογραφή με αναπαραστάσεις προσώπων, πορτρέτα...- όπως ο Shepard Fairey με το ψευδώνυμο Obey. Μαθητής ακόμη το 1989, δημιούργησε ένα εικονίδιο «Ο Αντρέ ο Γίγαντας έχει μια κατοχή» και έφτιαξε ένα αυτοκόλλητο από αυτό που μοίρασε στους φίλους του ζητώντας τους να το κολλήσουν παντού. Ο στόχος του είναι να μας κάνει να συνειδητοποιήσουμε ότι οι εικόνες που βλέπουμε έχουν όλες ένα νόημα και ότι είναι σημαντικό να το κατανοήσουμε.
Η νέα γενιά δεν θα χρησιμοποιεί πλέον μόνο το δοχείο αεροζόλ για να εισβάλει στον αστικό χώρο, αλλά θα χρησιμοποιεί αυτοκόλλητα, κολάζ, μωσαϊκό, στένσιλ...
Το γαλλικό Space Invider θα εισβάλει στον δημόσιο χώρο κολλώντας ψηφιδωτές ψηφίδες στους τοίχους για να δημιουργήσει γραφικά εμπνευσμένα από το arcade παιχνίδι Space Invaders του 1978. Η Invader έχει εγκαταστήσει πάνω από 3000 ανταλλακτικά σε περισσότερες από 60 πόλεις σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Σε αντίδραση στην οπτική ρύπανση που δημιουργείται από την εμπορική επικοινωνία στον δημόσιο χώρο, ο καλλιτέχνης Zevs θα εκτρέψει τα λογότυπα μεγάλων εμπορικών σημάτων υγροποιώντας τα στις προσόψεις των πολυκαταστημάτων μετά το σκοτάδι. Θα δημιουργήσει επίσης σκιές αντικειμένων επίπλων δρόμου ζωγραφίζοντας τις σκιές αυτών των αντικειμένων στα πεζοδρόμια.
Με τα χρόνια, ο καλλιτέχνης Banksy θα χρησιμοποιήσει την τέχνη του για να καταγγείλει τις αποτυχίες της κοινωνίας με χιούμορ, ποίηση και συγκλονιστικά γραφικά, ιδιαίτερα χρησιμοποιώντας την τεχνική του στένσιλ. Οι απλές και εκλεπτυσμένες σκηνές του εκπλήσσουν και σημαδεύουν τα μυαλά. Γρήγορα έγινε ένας από τους πιο γνωστούς καλλιτέχνες. Άλλοι Γάλλοι καλλιτέχνες θα χρησιμοποιήσουν αυτή την τεχνική όπως οι Miss.Tic, Blek le Rat, Jef Aérosol ή C215.
Η τέχνη του δρόμου εξελίσσεται συνεχώς. Από τα απλά γκράφιτι των αρχών του μέχρι τα γκράφιτι του Seen ή του JonOne, οι τεχνικές διαφοροποιούνται. Οι καλλιτέχνες γκράφιτι συνεχίζουν να χρησιμοποιούν σπρέι για να δημιουργούν τα έργα τους. Χρησιμοποιούν όμως και νέες τεχνικές και στηρίγματα όπως μωσαϊκό, στένσιλ, αυτοκόλλητο, εγκαταστάσεις, γλυπτική ή προβολή βίντεο.
Καλλιτέχνης που κατάφερε να κρατήσει μυστική την ταυτότητά του από τα ΜΜΕ. Τα έργα του έγιναν κυρίως με στένσιλ αρχικά στους δρόμους του Λονδίνου πριν εισβάλλουν στους δρόμους όλου του κόσμου.
Το σατιρικό και ανατρεπτικό του έργο πραγματοποιείται με στόχο να αναδείξει έναν διαφορετικό τρόπο σκέψης από τον ατμοσφαιρικό. Ειδικά τα ΜΜΕ. Το έργο του επικεντρώνεται σε ισχυρές πολιτικές και κοινωνικές απαιτήσεις.
Το ντοκιμαντέρ του 2010 "Exit Through the Gift Shop" ήταν υποψήφιο για Όσκαρ Καλύτερου Ντοκιμαντέρ.
Γεννημένος το 1970, είναι σύγχρονος καλλιτέχνης γνωστός για τις γραφικές σειρές του. Γνωστός πρώτος για τα αυτοκόλλητα του, το έργο του έγινε διάσημο χάρη στην αφίσα του Μπαράκ Ομπάμα κατά τις προεδρικές εκλογές των ΗΠΑ το 2008.
Το έργο του βρίσκεται σε συλλογές πολλών μουσείων όπως το Μουσείο Μοντέρνας Τέχνης στη Νέα Υόρκη και το Μουσείο Victoria and Albert στο Λονδίνο.
