Διαφορετικοί τύποι πνευματικής τέχνης

Αν και πολλοί καλλιτέχνες επηρεάστηκαν από τον Πνευματισμό, πολύ λίγοι δημιούργησαν αυτό που οι Πνευματικοί αναφέρουν ως «τέχνη του πνεύματος». Τι ακριβώς συνιστά «τέχνη πνεύματος» μπορεί να κατηγοριοποιηθεί σε τρεις κύριες κατηγορίες: «κατακρημνισμένα» έργα τέχνης. Στη δεύτερη ομάδα (πορτρέτα πνευμάτων), τα πνεύματα λέγεται ότι συχνά κατευθύνουν και τα χέρια του μέσου, αλλά στην τρίτη κατηγορία δημιουργούνται διάφορα έργα τέχνης και όχι πορτρέτα των ίδιων των πνευμάτων.

«Καταβυθισμένα» έργα τέχνης

Ο David Duguid (1832-1907) ήταν το πρώτο γνωστό μέσο που μπόρεσε να «κατακρημνίσει» ζωγραφιές με πνεύματα. Αν και ο Duguid ζωγράφιζε συχνά με τη βοήθεια πνευματικών ζωγράφων, κατά τη διάρκεια των συναυλιών του οι οδηγοί του δημιουργούσαν επίσης «άμεσους» (κατακρημνισμένους) πίνακες.
