Salvador Dali was born on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain. He was one of the great eccentrics of his era, famous for his original ways of promoting his art. He showed talent already in his early childhood. He took lessons at the age of ten and exhibited his works at the age of fourteen. He created conscious self-promotion, the symbol of which remains to this day his characteristically curled mustache, which he wrapped when posing for photos. He did not complete any higher artistic studies because he believed that he was more competent in artistic fields than the professors who examined him. Two artists in particular left their mark on his work, namely Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso. However, he was accused of greed and supporting fascism, which was not in line with the Parisian Surrealists' milieu. His work had been systematically gaining popularity since the 1930s, so in 1974 he was even able to open his own museum in his hometown of Figueres. He not only painted, but also photographed, designed, sculpted, and tried to act in films. He died of heart failure on January 23, 1989 in Figueres.
