L'envers de Tunis (2018) Photography by Kmar Douagi

Kmar Douagi was born in Tunis in 1996, and it was very quickly that she became interested in photography. A medium that will become an almost vital practice for her when she tragically loses her best friend Sadri in July 2017. Since then, she has been collecting images in a hurry. She captures her infra-ordinary using her camera or a mobile phone because photographing has become a reflex to remember. A reflex to love. Occasionally she shows these images, which allows her to express herself without words as truly as possible. She arranges them, chooses them and each exhibition, each book is a declaration. The flashbacks of a story that belongs to him come back to us.

She leaves Tunisia for France in 2020, it is then that the images of an old world imbibe the colors of new landscapes that she discovers. The thirst for encounter grows, and it is in her vulnerability that she finds a place. The sweetness of a moment, the violence of an exchange, the purity of a story, this is where the most raw and sensitive portraits are born. It's when hearts are raw and powerful that Kmar Douagi finds a place. She then strives to tenderly draw portraits of life in the shadow of the construction of her new Afro-European identity, in the shadow of excesses, loneliness and doubts. The fluid colors of gender and sexuality. Guided by the healthy curiosity to know the human being, carried by the photography which leaves cairns in the chance of the roads and the crossings. Her shepherd's star is called Faouzia, she calls to the pilgrimage of universal love. She wants to bear witness to a world where beauty is found wherever one knows how to open one's eyes and one's mind.
