The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, 120 x 95 cm, oil on
canvas, december 2021
The famous title is borrowed from the nightmarish painting of Goya. The work visualises a deep-felt despair due to the increasing uncertainty during the worldwide pandemic crisis. It shows the naked body of a woman who has permitted that her mouth and eyes be closed by the PCR-mask and by VR-eyeglasses. Her mind was confused by medical infusions, her body was weakened - it is the picture of self-inflicted helplessness and victimisation. At the same time, body fluids drain off into an
undefined depth, which lingers threateningly from above and which is interspersed with sharp planes and abrupt changes between light and darkness. Blood cells and ovules can be observed, which seem to separate from the female body and which are drawn aloft, where they disappear to an unknown destination. The overall situation is reminiscent of an experimental laboratory
