El actual barrio La Ribera de Barcelona, fue el centro económico de la ciudad entre los siglos XIII a XV. Parte de su esplendor todavía podemos contemplarlo en el carrer Montcada, calle considerada como museo de arquitectura civil. Los primeros edificios datan de mediados del XII cuando Ramón Berenguer IV concedió a un grupo de nobles, encabezado por Guillem Ramón de Montcada, licencia para construir en esta zona en reconocimiento a su participación en la conquista de Tortosa. La estructura común de los palacios góticos de esta calle suele empezar por un arco semicircular dovelado que da paso a un patio del que arranca una escalinata de acceso a la planta primera, en la que se distribuían las estancias de los señores de la casa. La parte baja estaba destinada a oficinas de negocios y en la parte superior vivía el servicio. Algunos edificios tenían torres de baja altura, desde donde veían venir a los barcos, ya que la línea de mar estaba más cerca que ahora.
A partir del XVI el centro económico de Barcelona se desplazó hacia el actual barrio de la Mercè y La Ribera languideció.
En el XVIII volvió a ser protagonista, pero esta vez por un hecho penoso, ya que gran parte de él fue destruido tras la conquista de Barcelona por Felipe V al finalizar la Guerra de Sucesión.
En la parte destruida se construyó una ciudadela militar y los ciudadanos desplazados fueron reubicados en lo que quedó del barrio, lo que marcará profundamente la tipología urbana. Pasado el tiempo y las penurias, esa característica, le ha dado encanto y personalidad.
