This painting is a personal illustration of Ernest Hemingway's short story "The Old Man and the Sea", written in Cuba in 1951. Hemingway received the Pulitzer Prize and the Prize for this work in 1953-1954. Nobel Prize for Literature. After 84 days without result, the fierce and ultimately fruitless fight of the old fisherman with the marlin, then against the sharks that devour his catch, however, gives him back his honor, his pride and the esteem of other fishermen and of the young boy who usually accompanies. Despite the enthusiasm and the rewards, the novel has sometimes been criticized. Shared myself, not on the story told and almost too well known only on Hemingway's writing, I interpreted this work in a way that was both admiring and somewhat irreverent: sharks in the form of a toy in plastic and the old man in the form of a small Hulk figurine, also in plastic, magnifying and giving the spotlight on the contrary to the marlin. (Small digression: it's the same feeling, moreover, very irreverent, that I can have big game fishermen, junk heroes compared to the fish they fish with significant means and assistance on a large motorized boat. But after all, the fish don't cry ...) On the technical level, the work is painted in acrylic on wood. The most famous adaptation is the film by John Sturgess, with Spencer Tracy, in 1958. Another, for television, involves Anthony Quinn, in 1989.
