Philippe Casaubon
Painting is the color of time
Philippe Casaubon, a French painter born in Saint-Brieuc in 1952, currently resides in Bagnolet, France, where he passionately pursues his artistic endeavors. Throughout his life, the realm of imagery has been a constant companion, guiding his personal and professional trajectory, whether consciously or unconsciously.
Casaubon's journey through academia, where he studied Advertising and Graphic Arts, and his subsequent professional roles, including Video production, Model Designing, and Acting, have been marked by an innate affinity for visual expression. The power of the image has consistently influenced his choices and creative paths, shaping his evolution as an artist.
In recent years, Casaubon's artistic exploration has led him towards abstraction, a trajectory that has solidified under the mentorship of Jean-Yves Guionet. Guided by Guionet's teachings, Casaubon has embraced abstraction as his primary mode of artistic expression.
Casaubon primarily works on paper using oil paints, often utilizing 300g/m2 canvas as his preferred substrate. He employs a variety of preparatory techniques, including caparol, acrylic, gouache, and watercolor, to enhance the texture and depth of his compositions.
An ethos of sustainability underpins Casaubon's artistic practice, as he frequently recycles his own works by repurposing and reworking them. This process of transformation ensures that nothing is wasted, with each piece contributing to the evolution of his artistic vision.
Casaubon's artistic journey has been enriched by his participation in various workshops, including those led by Vigilio Jattosti, Bruno Mathon, and Jean-Yves Guionet. It was under Guionet's tutelage that Casaubon found his distinctive style and original voice, with Guionet serving as both a mentor and a catalyst for the development of his palette.
Affiliated with the Maison des Artistes (MDA), Casaubon is recognized within the artistic community for his innovative approach to abstraction and his commitment to sustainable artistic practices. Through his work, he invites viewers to engage with the evocative power of imagery, inviting them into a world of vibrant colors, dynamic textures, and boundless creativity.

"It is important to remember that a picture, before being a battle horse, a nude woman, or some anecdote, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order," Maurice Denis (1870 - 1943) .
It took me a long time to switch from the image to the painting . For several years. Since it takes several years for the child to master the language.
For a while, the object of my painting was the subject and revolved around the concept: I know what I do and the audience watching my work could say: I know what I see.
It took me a long time to integrate, not understand that the problem is elsewhere.
The painter paints, the viewer is watching.
That the viewer sees exactly what the painter wanted to express is perfectly secondary. Anyway he will never understand it. They do not have the same language. Asian calligraphy is first of all a language and yet we see only the form. Even the worst of insults expressed in this way can be beautiful.
The flower that grows does not mind the effect it will produce. It can be both beautiful and have thorns. Some do only see the flower, the other the thorns because they have experienced.
The painter who is only concerned with the effect it will produce, forget the thorns.
The painting is an adventure as for the painter and for the spectator of the work. And in this adventure, the map is not the territory.
I work in oil on paper. I always have about thirty paintings ongoing because I see one that compared to another, and the whole forms an endless chain, inexhaustible and that feeds on itself.
The work is seen painted in a comprehensive manner. One can taste the Mondrian recent years by knowing its infancy.
My painting is based on rhythm, composition and harmony. Harmony, in mythology, the daughter of Mars and Venus. It is this contrast that guides me. Color contrast, shape, material, complementarity and contrast elements.

Vuillard
"Forcing yourself to use limited resources is a constraint which releases the invention. This requires progress in a way that one can not imagine a priori". Picasso
"A large part of artistic expression falls within the unconscious. It seems to me that it is the unconscious that it needs its most important and conscious activity plays that are a secondary role. " Hopper
The art begins where words end.
Art is the only way to stop the chaos.
"In fact, we know against previous knowledge, destroying knowledge poorly made, overcoming that in the same spirit prevents the spiritualization" Bachelard
"Painting grasp the mystery of the fact that if the artist does not know how to go about it," Bacon
"I obey no intention, no system, no trend, I have no program, no style, no frills" Gerhard Richter.
"After seeing the great masters, he must hurry to get out and check in itself the instincts, feelings that reside in us," Cézanne.
"As the role of the poet is to write the dictation of what thinks, which is based in him, the role of the artist is to identify and plan what is seen in him," Max Ernst.
"All I've done before 70 years is worthless," Hokusai.
"When I am in my painting, I'm not aware of what I do because a painting has its own life. I try to let emerge," Pollock.
"This is what I do, which teaches me what I want," Soulages.
"The importance of an artist is measured by the quantity of new signs he introduced into the visual language," Matisse.
"The amateur painter posing for the first time his pencil on paper or his brush seems more or less in the same state of mind that the patient in his debut on the pschanalytique couch. The two steps, both psychoanalytic as creative, seem to require similar external conditions and internal. It requires the same "circumstances in which it is safe to have their minds elsewhere" (that is to say where logic and reason are absent aware of mind). We find the same reluctance to transgress beyond the reassuring boundaries of the secondary process and to "accept chaos as a temporary step." The same fear of "diving into non-differentiation and disbelief in" spontaneous organizing forces "that emerge once the dive is made. Especially one meets the same terror of the unknown, "Anna Freud, preface to" Dreaming Painting "Marion Milner.
Even outside the visible matter, a work produces its effect by the expression lines and spots. Vuillard

Your work speaks to me a lot and I find in it the necessary and sufficient mixture of abstract and figurative to make it an authentic pictorial language that belongs only to it.
Merci Philippe pour vos ajouts.

Merci beaucoup Philippe!
