Expressionism drawings to buy on Artmajeur
While many artists have created paintings and works of literature inspired by the Expressionist movement, there are also many examples of this style outside of Germany. Many poets and writers adopted Expressionist dramatic techniques, including American authors Eugene O'Neill and Elmer Rice. The aim of Expressionist poetry was to convey feeling, and many of these poems contain pessimistic themes and satires of bourgeois values. Throughout their work, they strive to convey a particular state of mind or general truths.
Expressionist art reflected the mood and emotional response to the world around them. It incorporated jarring perspective and distorted views. Artists tended to incorporate more grotesque elements, as the First World War loomed over Europe. Additionally, many Expressionist artists began experimenting with printmaking as a means to circulate their art and critique social causes. Expressionist artists also began focusing on examining the role of the body in society, attempting to portray the inner self through their art.
An that anticiped the Expressionist movement was Edvard Munch. He incorporated tribal and folk art into his paintings, incorporating symbolism and experimentation with colour. Other famous Expressionist artists included Emil Nolde, a Norwegian landscape painter. The ghoulish figures in Munch's paintings convey a sense of deep pain and anguish. In fact, many art historians consider his work more important than the style itself.
