Au centre du tableau se trouve un vieil homme, qui peut représenter une figure allégorique de la sagesse et du temps. Son visage sombre et pensif parle du fardeau des années passées et de la sagesse accumulée de la vie. Il agit comme un observateur des événements qui se déroulent dans ce monde.
À gauche de l'aîné se trouve un monstre aquatique, il est l'une des créatures de la mythologie slave. Il symbolise les forces naturelles et leur impermanence. Les mains agrippantes soulignent la lutte de l'homme avec le pouvoir de la nature et sa dépendance à son égard.
La partie la plus fascinante et mystérieuse de cette image est un géant dont le visage va au-delà de l'image. C'est quelque chose d'inimaginablement plus que ce qui peut être montré sur la photo, et c'est peut-être une métaphore de la soif humaine sans fin de connaissances et de recherches. Le géant apparaît comme un symbole de l'ambition et du désir de savoir d'une personne.
