Animal emblématique de la royauté éthiopienne (emblème animalier de la dynastie davidique et salomonique), le lion est sans aucun doute le symbole le plus souvent associé à l’identité rastafarienne6 .
Dès les prémices du mouvement rastafari, les premiers prédicateurs confrontent les titres hérités par Haïlé Sélassié Ier (né sous le signe du lion…) lors de son sacre impérial en novembre 1930 (« Roi des rois, Seigneur des seigneurs, Lion Conquérant de la Tribu de Juda, élu de Dieu et Défenseur de la foi ») à plusieurs passages de la Bible. Tout comme l’agneau, le lion est l’une des figures du Christ (« Juda est un jeune lion » (Genèse XXXXIX : 9 )).
Très vite, le Négus est exalté comme le nouveau messie libérateur du peuple noir tel ce lion conquérant et victorieux mentionné dans les premiers chants rastas : « The Lion of Juda shall break every chain and give us the victory again and again… »

An emblematic animal of the Ethiopian royalty (the animal emblem of the Davidic and Solomonic dynasty), the lion is undoubtedly the symbol most often associated with the Rastafarian identity6.
As early as the beginning of the Rastafari movement, the first preachers confronted the titles inherited by Haile Selassie I (born under the sign of the lion ...) during his imperial coronation in November 1930 ("King of kings, Lord of lords, Lion Conqueror of the Tribe Of Judah, chosen of God and Defender of the Faith ") to several passages of the Bible. Like the lamb, the lion is one of the figures of Christ ("Judah is a young lion" (Genesis XXXIX: 9)).
Very soon, the Negus is exalted as the new liberating messiah of the black people as the conquering and victorious lion mentioned in the first rastas chants: "The Lion of Judah shall break every chain and give the victory again and again ..."
