Annette Aspen is a self-taught mixed media artist, epilepsy advocate, retired BBC World Service studio manager, wife and mother living and painting in Royal Tunbridge Wells Kent.
Annette's practice is strongly linked to her neurological condition, as she narrates her emotional rollercoaster through colour and texture onto canvases of varying sizes. Abstract painting allows her the freedom to express herself honestly and openly, with no judgement. Annette explains that hand tremors and double vision, can sometimes enhance the piece and you'd never know, unlike if she were attempting to draw a still life!
Annette says that she is certain her 'broken brain', as she calls it, directly affects how she paints, and that she can tell which of her paintings were created before, after and even during a seizure. In her work Annette is trying to break out of the stereotype that is attached to this hidden illness, yet embracing the fact that it’s because of her epilepsy that she discovered art therapy and changed her way of life.
Annette’s works have caught the eye of collectors from Aberdeen to Brighton, and have regularly appeared on beer cans at a microbrewery in Pennsylvania for since 2021.
Painting what affects her visually and emotionally Annette hopes that she might inspire others who are living with the condition and raise some awareness. She donates 20% of all her artwork sales to The National Brain Appeal to go towards epilepsy research, and would like you to know that, by supporting her, you are helping to make a difference.
