Peacock tells of secret desires. It’s an allegory of beauty and passion, and a certain tribute to Grande Odalisque by Jean Auguste Ingres. Allusions to Odalisque can be traced in the model’s turn of the head, the peacock feather, the draperies, the overall intended decorative quality of the painting.
Peacock is an erotic piece, yet with an underlying message. How far can one go with one’s desires? How honest are we with ourselves, do we know ourselves? The painting is full of symbols in which to read its hidden sense. A cock’s cry heralds the dawn, the new day, banishes evil powers of night. A snake means wisdom, on the one hand, and temptation, on the other. A lizard symbolises rebirth. A peacock feather holds many connotations: love, greatness, vanity, longevity, joie de vivre...
The painting was in Odessa International Art Prize nominees’ exhibition in Sady Pobedy gallery, August 2019 (Odessa, Ukraine). The artist won the Prize.
