Working with gold leaf demands careful preparation and can be tricky. I employed gesso and painstakingly polished the face and other parts of the portrayed lady, creating an ideal reflective surface for the gold leaf's luster.
This refined process, rooted in centuries-old traditions, requires significant time and effort, yet the outcome justifies the dedication. As seen in the photograph, the contrast between the silver leaf on the primed 350gsm W&N canvas and the part of the gold on the polished gesso on the face and berries is visually different. Balancing the quantity of gold is an intricate art; knowing when to stop is crucial to preserving the harmony and composition to keep the overall vibe of the artwork.
