Mio fratello uscì dalla porta posteriore di casa per rovesciare l’immondizia nel bidone del compost e così, senza chiederlo, si trovò arruolato nell’esercito del Duca Von Brassen, i confini del cui stato comprendevano il nostro cortile; io invece, messa in spalla la sacca e la canna da pesca, imboccato il viottolo del torrente, fui placcato ed arruolato in quello della Grande Alleanza Occidentale.
Io e mio fratello eravamo nemici.
La guerra in trincea era piuttosto scomoda anche se avveniva nei pressi di casa mia; in pratica combattevo per difendere il confine dello stato che comprendeva metà della mia casa e l’aia di fronte.
Spesso pensavo a mio fratello che combatteva nell’altra trincea e che, più di una volta, mi parve di vedere, di schiena, strisciare nella ridotta, velocemente, come una anguilla.
Una notte, in un momento propizio, ebbi il coraggio di chiamarlo, a basa voce: “Ninetto, Ninetto”, e Ninetto mi rispose: “Luigi sei tu?”.
Ci dicemmo tante cose che è inutile ripetere perché interessavano solo noi e che non ricordo con precisione, mi ricordo solo che Ninetto aveva fame, allora gli lanciai la mia pagnotta senza dirgli che avevo fame anch’io.
