A portrait taken on a road trip to the east coast of South Africa known as the Transkei in 2015. I used the process of double exposure to shoot two different images on the same frame on Portra film on my analogue camera: one the long empty road ahead; the second, an image of Shelley and Kat lying at the shorefront of the empty quiet beaches just before a tropical storm.

Through this artwork, I wanted to explore the duality of life - the contrast between the peaceful, serene moments and the unpredictable, chaotic ones. At the same time, my love of Africa, travel, and documentary photography brought me here, as I sought to capture the essence of these themes in a setting that evokes a sense of adventure and discovery.

The artwork comes to you in a tube as a Giclée pigment print on Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta 325gsm archival paper. It a heavy weight fine art paper with a subtle gloss, ideal for prints with deep blacks and colour photographs that are rich and high in contrast.

Romy Maxime, South African photographer, videographer and visual artist is known for her enigmatic portraits and fine art prints. She is based between Cape Town, South Africa and Zurich, Switzerland.

Mixing both digital and analogue techniques, her signature style is defined by cinematic black and white portraits of people. Her work explores themes of vulnerability, joy and beauty, the female gaze, portraiture and Africa.

Romy is also a videographer and director - her most recent short film "Spirit of Kibera", filmed in Kenya on the art of dance received critical acclaim and was premiered on Document Journal in January this year.

Poetry, literature from the likes of Mary Oliver, Pablo Neruda, Bertolt Brecht and personal imprints from a life of travel are Romy's key influences. After completing a degree in finance at the Wharton School in Philadelphia, she furthered careers in journalism and advertising, moving between Berlin and Cape Town.

Her art book on women and the female gaze "Librations" can be seen under the project sections. She works both as an artist selling prints and NFTS, as well as on commissions (in colour) for fashion, look-books, editorials, portraits, lifestyle, advertising and beauty photography.

Romy's portraits have been featured in VOGUE, Tatler Magazine, Rolling Stone Magazine, The Mail & Guardian, Vice Magazine among others and her client list includes Hauser & Wirth, Swisscom, Swiss Life, Triumph, Innervisions Music, Ry X, Traffic Magazine and Bo & Luca.

Her award winning portraits have been showcased by Lens Culture, Life Framer, and the C/O Berlin Museum (Allure Award).

Romy Maxime's most recent solo exhibition was at the Peponi Hotel in Lamu, Kenya in January of 2023 - an exhibition themed around the children of Ubunifu. Romy had her first exhibit in London at Hauser & Wirth in May 2022, a fundraiser event with a short film by Romy and limited edition print auction of her work in collaboration with NGO Ubunifu in Kenya. She will be an exhibiting artist at Image Nation Paris at the Galerie Joseph Le Palais this year in May 2023
