Personal Statement
I am Chen Qiuchi, a Chinese artist. I began my career as a liberal-occupation artist since the “YUANMINGYUAN Stage” in China in the beginning of 1990. My works have been exhibited in Changchun, Shenyang, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong of China, Seoul of Korea, London of England, Cologne and Berlin of Germany and the like for many times. I participated in “Art Cologne” and “Seoul International Art Fair”.
I received strict training on modeling ability and oil painting technique. However, as a contemporary artist, I have my own conscience. I cannot concern myself with the reality, the changes and problems occurring in the process of development of human society.
My works are schemas composed of picture symbol of human head. These ‘symbols’ are accumulating and expanding as virus, or guffaw or outcry, so as to express the difficult choice of human in development. That is, whether human are to choose peaceful and environmental protection development, or the war and development at the expense of damaging the environment.
The swelling desire of human, crazy development in armaments and science and technology, and inequality in human right, pollution of environment and crisis of energy, etc., pestering the world like plague……
It is undeniable that, the technology that we have known is only one of the methods that people know and transform the world rather than the sole method. However, the concept of technology has penetrated in people’s mind and each field of life. People’s minds are controlled by modern technology and their own desire unconsciously……
Just as that said by Einstein: “Where do we come from, where is the human heading for?”
My paintbrush gives such a long sigh, trying to arouse the love in human heart through my works and their conscience that is in sound sleep, so as to make the globe where human and other animals are inhibited remain peace and vitality……
As some well-known reasons, I can only mail some works including oil paintings on the shelf, digital images and sculptures from 1998 to the present to your organization. I sincerely expect that I have the chance of cooperating with your organization and let more people to see my works.
"When China awakes, the world will tremble" said Napoleon Bonaparte. This vision was prescient. Despite the "great leap forward", "cultural revolution" and the new "Communo-capitalist" economic boom, artists have succeeded in creating strong, provocative and politically engaging works. Qiuchi Chen is a perfect example.
He was born in a small village in the district town of Dehui, Jilin Province in the northeast of China. His studies were marked by the "cultural revolution" and its excesses. Once he completed his studies, he worked as a construction worker, but the work was tedious and difficult. Qiuchi Chen had had a well kept secret since childhood: his passion for art! To exercise it he copied cartoon characters, while dreaming one day of learning to draw and paint.
This resulted in his enrolling in evening classes at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Normal University of the Northeast. He had finally found a way for self expression. Thanks to his work, he was able to demonstrate all the things that he had never been able to say before about the world and society.
His paintings are of weapons, deserts, famous buildings .... and symbolic representations of human heads, crying, screaming, laughing, agglomerating, multiplying and spreading like a virus.
For Qiuchi Chen, a dilemma and an evolutionary choice arises. Either we get closer to nature and its preservation or we plunge into war along with the economic and industrial development that leads to destruction. He considers how ubiquitous technology has penetrated minds and all areas of life, seeming to us the only acceptable model of evolution. Mind and spirit are being controlled by this technology.
But through his paintings Chen Qiuchi tries to "shake" us, and resuscitate love in the human heart while making us aware of the value of life, freedom, human rights and to point out that our desires for expansion and development are ultimately destructive.
