Biography Pierre Vogel
. After his schooling at Calvin College, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, which he left after six months to undertake long trips through Europe, the USA and Africa. On his return he decided to devote himself exclusively to artistic creation. His first exhibition of paintings took place in 1960 in Geneva. To broaden his vocabulary of forms and enrich his pictorial technique, he draws on film, studies photography, is passionate about engraving and builds his first press to print etchings.
Passionate about both classical and contemporary music , he built several musical instruments, an organ, then his Vogella, a sort of big 8-string guitar, and a koto.
At the end of the 1960s he created sets for the Théâtre de Poche, then he met Serge Golovine and created sets and costumes at the Grand Théâtre de Genève for several ballets.
At that time, he discovered Indian music, built his own sitar and a surbahar. He became friends with Ravi Shankar.
He created a dance hall in Geneva, the "Black Bird" which is distinguished by an inflatable track.
In 1966, he was invited to collaborate on the illustration of contemporary German poets, published in “Centaur II” edited by H. Raumschüssel in Göttingen. In 1972, he engraved and published the book “Parallel” (poems by P. Verlaine) presented at the Musée de l’Athénée. In 1978, he published 20 pen drawings in the magazine “Obliques” devoted to Alain Robbe-Grillet (ed. Borderie, Paris).
In the years 1989-1993 he produced several murals.
From 1974 until 2005 he exhibited both in Switzerland and abroad, in Germany, France, Poland, Canada and Latin America, in galleries and museums, notably at the Galerie Cour Saint-Pierre, Europ-Art Palexpo, Rath Museum, Museum of Art and History in Geneva, Helmhaus in Zurich, Skipholt Gallery in Reykjavik, Haus der Kunst in Munich. In 2006 he took his independence by inaugurating the Pavillon de la Tulette, where he regularly shows his work and that of artists he esteems.

la peinture et les arts martiaux
Mes plus grandes passions sont la peinture et le karaté, et je ne saurais
concevoir l'une sans l'autre.
Ces deux arts - car le karaté est un art au même titre que la peinture, la
danse ou la musique - semblent, à première vue, parfaitement opposés
l'un à l'autre. Ne dit-on pas que la peinture est "cosa mentale" tandis que
l'art martial exige avant tout une grande discipline corporelle. Pour moi,
pourtant, le contraire est tout aussi vrai : le karaté, sans un esprit à la
fois
clair et inventif, se réduit à une suite de mouvements violents, dépourvus
de sens; et la peinture, sans l'intelligence de la main, sans une sorte de
maîtrise somme toute physique, n'est que prétention pompeuse, tout
aussi ennuyeuse.
C'est pourquoi je crois que ces deux arts sont parfaitement complémentaires.
Le peintre est seul face à sa toile ou sa feuille, et souvent ses idées
s'enchêvetrent d'une façon inextricable, alors la pratique du karaté en
compagnie des camarades ou des élèves permet de retrouver la fluidité
et la concentration de l'esprit, et par conséquent de la main, sans laquelle
aucun art n'est possible.
Le dessinateur tente de trouver le trait à la fois le plus expressif et le
plus
dépouillé, le karatéka cherche le mouvement le plus efficace et le plus
fluide :
dans les deux cas, il s'agit de capter une sensation fugitive, mais bien
réelle : une sorte de bonheur qui ne se réalise que par l'action.
