I was born in Vienna and I am of French nationality, family and language. My formal training is in visual arts, painting and drawing, art history, culture theory, commercial illustration, multi-media and visual communication design.

As a commercial artist I employ theoretical concepts of design as an applied social science towards visually encoding client-oriented goals. To some extent I have utilized my training in visual communication to inform traditional modes of artworking and to generate original biosemotic theory of a human-animal relational aesthetic, which I have also applied to my painting in animal portraiture. (Pahin and MacFadyen, 2012)

However, as a figurative artist my work ultimately aims to obviate cultural conventions of pictorial composition in favour of portraying a pure phenomenology of organic form. My work considers the formal aesthetic elements of natural phenomena and approaches the subject of nature from an organicist and ontic structuralist reading. In this manner I find myself influenced by the representational veracity of pre-raphealite painting and the organicist themes present in 19th century literature and architecture.

To some extent my illustrations of botanical and bucolic scenery are a response to rationalist traditions of aesthetic beauty and an attempt to circumscribe the poetics of self-similar form. I am particularly interested in depicting non-linear aesthetics of natural environments and visual manifestations of organic unity perceivable in ecosystems; as well as in visually exploring the relation between built environments and organic form. – Philipp Pahin
