I was born in Seattle, Washington in 1952. My family moved to Pullman, Washington in 1953, where I spent the rest of my childhood and young adult years in a small town environment.

In 1976 I obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Washington State University, where I specialized in graphic design and photography.

I have studied with a number of wonderful artists, including Richard McKinley, Desmond O'Hagan, Susan Ogilvie, Marla Baggetta, Andrew Hofmeister, Gaylen Hansen, Richard Thornton, and Victor Moore.

I am a current member of the Northwest Pastel Society and the Photographic Society of America.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My inspirations do not just come from many of the great masters, but from the artists I have studied under during my education. I have also been fortunate to have a mother who also has a BFA from WSU. She was the catalyst for me to pursue my art degree, and is still painting at age 91. Besides my mother, the person who was an early mentor to me was artist/sculptor Victor "Vic" Moore. He was my art instructor for six years in the Pullman School District - when art was still considered curriculum.

Most of my work leans towards Realism, and usually conveys an image of calmness or wonder. Though each painting, glass work, or photograph, has a special meaning to me, I want the viewer to walk away with their own emotions from the work - in this way they also become part of the creative process.

Many artists are known for one certain style or subject matter. The search to create something different sometimes takes me across a wide variety of styles, medium, and subject matter. My latest art is primarily done using soft pastels, with my paintings being impressionistic landscapes and cityscapes. I've also have a passion for creating glass sculptures/paperweights, and digital photography.

Like most artists, I feel I have been blessed with a gift. A gift that allows me to create work that brings out the many different emotions of those who view it. I feel the most comfortable painting recognizable images. Most of my current work definitely leans towards Realism. My paintings usually convey an image of calmness or wonder. Though each painting has a special meaning for me, I want the viewer to walk away with their own emotions from the work, in this way they also become part of the creative process.

He was my art teacher for six years in the Pullman School District. The positive reinforcement and attention that Vic gave his students was unforgettable. Vic Moore had shown his students a true passion for art back then, which I now have today. The following are the WSU art professors who influenced me the most: Richard Thornton, Andrew Hofmeister, Robert Feasley, Robert Sterling, and Francis Ho.

To quote one of my WSU professors, Andrew Hofmeister, who grew up on a homestead in Montana - "I have observed this land all my life. I've had my spring. I've had my summer and my autumn. After gathering firewood from the "timber" ridge, insulating the cave with more earth, and stacking feed for the livestock, my parents would say: "We are now well-prepared for winter." And now, I feel I am prepared too." Andrew Hofmeister is now in his 90's.

I believe I'm having "my autumn", and hope that winter is only in the distant future!

Painting once again has brought about a much needed spiritual awakening to this artist's soul. My only wish is for my art to be viewed, absorbed, pondered and remembered.

I had a fantastic and creative time at Desmond O'Hagan's three day workshop in June of 2007. Desmond paints both in soft pastels and in oils. Most of the participants in this workshop were pastel artists. The workshop was put on by NPS (Northwest Pastel Society). This will be short and sweet, mainly because I took limited photos (no WIP's), and also the fact that Desmond’s technique is a very simple one - work with Shapes, Light and Dark areas, with only Implied Detail.
