WENDIGO or WINDIGO
In a round canvas, surrounded by the colors of the four directions, appears Wendigo, an anthropophagous monster. His face, inspired by an Innu mask, topped with antler, exudes expressive strength. This giant and monstrous creature haunts the subarctic forests at dawn in search of lost humans, whom it will devour in the darkness. The deliberately greenish color of the painting accentuates the dramatic atmosphere of the scene. The Wendigo gives off a strange and disturbing odor of degradation, decay, death and corruption. It is associated with excesses of all kinds. In certain traditions, the man who is dominated by greed could transform into a Wendigo, the myth thus becoming a way of advocating cooperation and moderation.

The Wendigo comes from the mythology of tribes speaking an Algonquian language, more particularly the Saulteaux, Ojibwa, Cree and Innu. All these cultures have in common the description of the Wendigowak as malicious and cannibalistic.
They are supernatural beings (manitous) possessing great spiritual strength. They prefer to live in the forest and are associated with winter, the north, cold weather and famine. They appear in tales where the supernatural rubs shoulders with inhuman and atrocious things.

Jean-Luc OSSWALD was born in Strasbourg, in 1950. He lives and works in the suburbs of Paris. Very early, he felt the need to express himself through drawing and painting.
Encouraged by his Art professor and supported by his family, he takes off on an artistic path in Paris. He is accepted at the competitive entrance examination of the Collège Art et Dessin and later at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d'Art. After graduating, he goes to Canada where he does some traveling. Upon his return to France, in 1972, he starts working for Draeger, an art editing publisher. He works on books about famous artists such as: Braque, Chagall, Dali, Fuchs, Magritte, Picasso...
Illustrator, chief of the art studio, artistic director, he works passionately, for nearly 30 years, as a graphic designer in advertising, a world dedicated to the cult of image and sign. His creativity leads him to experiment with digital imaging and editing while heading a team of graphic designers.
In 1999, he feels the need to widen his creative field and turns naturally to painting. Since the beginning of this adventure, he exhibits in numerous art galleries in France and abroad. His pictural work has received several awards.
He became a member of the Taylor Foundation in Paris in 2003 and in January 2005, he signs the manifest Un art pour l’Homme.
He teaches painting at a Plastic Arts Studio.
A permanent exhibition of his work can be seen in a Parisian area Art Gallery.
Today he is in search of his work’s echo... in France and abroad.
