Nicolas LEspagne is a photographer whose artistic work is deeply influenced by abstraction and abstract expressionism in painting. For him, photography offers a unique way to explore the emotions and concepts related to these artistic movements while capturing the real world around him.
His photographic series, notably the one entitled "Welded Landscapes", bear witness to his quest to strip reality of its perceived reality, while preserving its integrity. This paradoxical process involves eliminating elements such as time, narrative, depth and sensory impressions in order to retain only form. The end result of these experiments can sometimes seem abstract, creating a link between photography and abstract painting.
Nicolas attaches great importance to maintaining photography's ability to convey the reality of the medium. He refuses to complicate the image to the point of transforming it into painting or mixed media. Instead, he opts for normal subjects, simple shots, and compositions that are accessible to the viewer. The goal is to allow the audience to feel connected to the image, as if they had taken the photograph themselves.
Another important feature of his approach is the elimination of time. Nicolas believes that capturing a precise moment, although it can reveal an essential detail, often excludes the moment before and the moment after. He prefers to create images that suggest permanence, thereby eliminating duration. This approach aims to bring together the moments before and after the captured moment, creating a photographic experience that transcends time and captures the timeless essence of reality.
