About me

My name is Mihai Bodnaruc, I was born and raised in Romania, in a village called Rona de Sus.

I am a young artist, with over three years of artistic experience. My inclanation for art was visible from my childhood, I was passionate about making my own toys out of scrap, making city maps out of paper and all sorts of stuff .

I first got into woodcarving in my teenage years, found it really enjoyable and fun.

Realising the passion I had for woodcarving and the joy it brought me, I made a not-so-safe choise and got serious into woodcarving.

It was a process of trying things and watching others that got me into carving animals, finding it s really pleasing and suitable for me.

What I want to do

Making wood carvings of animals is a common thing, but what I think most fo them lack is a little dose of imperfection.

When looking at a real animal you see mess and color variation. Even if its fur is purely white, the anaimal is not just white. There are parts that got a little dirty, from mud, dust or food stains. It may have scratches and scars. The hair is not a perfectly brushed carpet, it can be messy, tangled or broken in some areas.

I want to capture that in my sculptures, to make every piece look different in its special way. I want to portray the rough story of the animal, difficulty of life, the way thier actions and surroundings shaped them

How I do it

I carve with a hatchet, chissels and gouges.

I shape the wood with the hatchet by bashing it into the wood. The blows are not fully controled wich leads to some univen cuts, chips and bits.

This way, I am able to give a furry texture, create some messy hair, scrathes and such to make the animal look more real, as shown above.

The chissels and gouges help me get some more necesarry details.

To make the whole picture complete, I paint the sculpture with acrilycs and it comes to life.
