Writing prose or music, painting or sculpting is the loneliest adventure, because it is a question of advancing within oneself further than the furthest one can lead others and reach these regions where only the artist, the spectator, and a third, unnamable, indefinable remain, these regions where the work of art, the spectator and the divine are identified. We could say that the artist is a mediator, a mediator between god and man, between man and the secret laws of nature.

This means that there is no room for compromise here.

I think of the silent radiance of the columned statues of Chartres
or even the silent radiance of Jean Siméon Chardin’s peaches…

There, the man fades away, the "doing" is invisible, the work is pure and prohibits any originality.
Because it is not the originality of a work that makes it great, it is its greatness that makes its originality.
And this does not find its source in instinct, but in the spiritual life of the artist.

The loss of spirituality among many artists means that what they produce is no longer art but only chaotic formal research intended for sale, elaborated with effects of shock and continuous excitement, inevitably increasing in a dead end bid.
Nothing here is more foreign to beauty and truth.
Today and since a certain Marcel Duchamp the spiritual concept has been banned and we think that it is enough to let go of our instinct to be an artist.
