Painting No. 36 - August 2009

this work had a difficult birth - it started out as a desire to create the "perfect" burnt orange - this quickly turned into a reddish-brown that I did not like - however I wanted to frame the edges in a color and considered white and then black - had I proceeded with either - I now know the work would have been lost - instead I chose yellow and started to blend from the outer edge toward the center - and the burnt orange color I had worked so long and hard to create was born - but there is more - I was painting outdoors and several winged insects became embedded in the slightly tacky paint - this alone could have ruined the work had I panicked and tried to quickly remove them with my fingers or brush - I did not - that night I left the painting outdoors to dry further and a strong storm wind pelted it with pine needles and other debris - again I was sure it was beyond repair - however I let the painting continue to dry - and came up with the novel idea (for me) to use a pair of tweezers to remove the entrapped insects and debris - it worked very well and the painting was restored with no visible blemishes - still unable to store the painting in a safe location it next was assaulted by a thunderstorm and drops of rain speckled it - I was sure it was now ruined as the rain drops would leave water marks - however I took some super-absorbent paper towels and started to gently blot the water from the canvas - after removing all the drops - visible rain marks still existed on the paint - still being patient - I let the painting dry for a few more days in the outdoor air and they have since disappeared - thankfully - so the result you see has had a difficult birth indeed ... new techniques do not always come with the brush alone ...

Glenn Michael Morley is a Canadian painter and photographer who discovered his passion for art unexpectedly. Born in Canada, he earned a degree in mathematics and history at the University of Toronto, before working as a product development engineer. Yet despite this professional background, Glenn always appreciated the work of the Impressionists, especially Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro, as well as artists like Louis David and Raoul Dufy.

It was in Lowell, Massachusetts, in the United States, that Glenn decided to take up painting. One very cold day, he came across van Gogh's Gear art store, run by artist Steve Syverson. Having no background in oil painting, he asked shop regulars for recommendations and left with enough paint, an easel, canvases and brushes to begin painting. He then lived in an old industrial building converted into a condominium, with 28-foot-high ceilings and a large window overlooking the city's man-made canal. The soft and unique light of this place inspired Glenn to create much of his work, which is often imbued with the ambiance of this place.

The first work he did, "Mother of Pearl", was created simply by letting inspiration guide colors. Glenn never took painting lessons because he felt the technique could too often stifle creativity and emotions. He wanted to focus on color and let his creativity run free, not trying to imitate a past style or create something with a specific meaning or meaning. For him, the important thing was to create colors and to be guided by the rhythm and the movement of his arms.

Today, Glenn Michael Morley is an accomplished artist, whose work is infused with his passion for color and creativity. He believes that location and environment have an impact on his work, as they influence his mood and emotions, which are then reflected in his painting.
