Khalil Hasan Khalil (b. 1958, Jizan, Saudi Arabia)
Khalil Hasan Khalil is a surrealistic style painter, but he prefar name his style "The Dreamism". He developed an interest in art from a young age, encouraged by his father, Khalil held his first exhibition in his parent’s courtyard upon graduating from middle school. He graduated from the Art Education Institute in Riyadh in 1976 and thereafter returned to Jizan to teach arts at a middle school. Khalil continued to study and obtained a diploma in art education from the Intermediate College.
In his early career, Khalil's paintings depicted realistic scenes from his local environment in Jizan. A turning point came in the 1980s winning numerous prizes from the General Presidency for Youth Welfare exhibitions and Saudi exhibitions and was critically acclaimed. This work established his unique style blending observable reality with dreamlike juxtapositions.
Khalil has participated extensively in exhibitions worldwide including the Contemporary Saudi Art Exhibition (1979); Great Saudian Exhibition (1980); the Seventh Exhibition of Arab Plastic Artists, Kuwait (1981); the Eighth Arab art exhibition, Kuwait (1983) the Third Cairo Biennale (1988); and venues across Europe, the Americas and the Arabian Gulf. His solo exhibitions were held in Jizan (1986) and Abha (1988).
Khalil established a private studio in Jizan in 1977, and has received numerous accolades including the first prize at the Contemporary Saudi Art Exhibition in Riyadh in 1979, the first prize for The Fifth General Exhibition for Formative Arts Collections, Riyadh (1981); Golden Sail Award, Kuwait (1981); first prize at the Seventh Exhibition for Formative Arts Collections, Riyadh (1983); first prize at the Eighth Exhibition for Formative Arts Collections, Riyadh (1984); Abha's Prize Exhibition in Abha in 1989; Golden Palm award, Riyadh (1989). The Jizan Art Club published a book of his works titled “My Dreams” with accompanying essays in 1986.
