Joyce Fournier
Art in all its forms has been my lifelong inspiration and most passionate journey.
Joyce Fournier is a Canadian multidisciplinary painter and sculptor living and working in Toronto. Art is her true passion and she has had an extensive practice for more than 25 years.
Joyce's current focus is Abstract Expressionist painting using a palette of white, black, and gold to create gestural pieces in a variety of collections inspired by the works of Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, and Pierre Soulages. It is the immediacy of gestural painting that excites her. She wants those in her audience to see what uniquely speaks to them, depending on their situation.
Her secondary practice is in sculpture, both abstract and figurative. Interpreting the human form was Joyce's first passion for which she was academically trained. Her most recent works are figurative sculptures in Clay and Bronze as well as mixed-media abstract wall sculptures (Formations Series).
Over the last fifteen years, Joyce has exhibited in solo and group shows within Canada and internationally. Featured on several occasions in American Art Collector magazine since 2009, her work is found in private and public collections in Canada, the USA, and Europe.

This series is a collection of works inspired by the paintings of American artist, Joan Mitchell, (1925 - 1992).
I have always had a fond admiration for Mitchell's spontaneous style and many of my recent works have somehow 'morphed' into creations along those lines.

In this new series, Joyce has moved her popular Eclectic Vision works into a more minimalistic style. Here the use of Black and White is paramount to accentuate the immediacy of the work. Joyce has been inspired by the works of Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, and Pierre Soulages among others in their use of black on white (white on black) to tell a story with conviction in a gestural fashion

This series was inspired by Joyce's love of Gold, White, and Black and how they interact with one another when used together in an acrylic pour.
Each work has been created allowing the paint to mix on the canvas through manipulation and movement. Amazing surprises happen along the way. Each work is sealed with a professional high gloss varnish which adds to the aesthetic.

They are created by gradually building up several layers of paint, first with the use of brushes and then finished with various-sized palette knives. Each work, where RED is the main event, has a multitude of variations of red and/or orange, sometimes pink, dark greys and black, and often gold.

This series has been inspired by the works of several of the great Abstract Expressionists of Post World War II, which include Franz Kline, Hans Hoffmann, and Robert Motherwell.
Most of the paintings are gestural, otherwise known as 'action works'. There is a strong use of color, often red and sometimes pink, along with shades of grey and black, and almost always gold pulling the viewer into the work. Each painting begins with a textured application of Acrylic Gesso to create a design after which acrylic paint is applied allowing the underpainting to show through and add interest. Splatters, drips, and markings are a big part of the process.
