My formal art training has included college art courses and private lessons for several years with Baltimore artist Katie Pumphrey with whom I worked primarily on acrylic painting technique. I also took a year of abstract painting lessons at the Delaplaine Arts Center in Frederick, Maryland. I have traveled widely visiting numerous art museums and galleries which has helped me refine my artistic tastes and skills. My early interest was in the impressionists and post-impressionists but I have for years been drawn to the abstract expressionists,  such as Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Hans Hoffman, and Joan Mitchell to name some favorites. They have been influences, along with more contemporary abstract artists I have come across, in the development of my work. However, I really have only been able to focus my energy and time on developing a personal style and confidence as an artist since I retired from my work as a psychiatrist about 2 years ago.
