Le château de Roquetaillade, situé à Mazères, entre Langon et Bazas en Gironde (33), est un site historique exemplaire ; dès la préhistoire, les hommes se sont enracinés sur ces lieux, profitant des grottes pour s'abriter, et du promontoire pour se défendre. Charlemagne, en route vers les Pyrénées avec Roland, y construisit la première fortification. Avec l'évolution des techniques de construction et de défense, la forteresse passe du bois à la pierre, et s'agrandit à chaque génération de Seigneur.
En 1306, avec la permission du roi d'Angleterre, Edward I, le Cardinal de la Mothe bâtit une deuxième forteresse : le Château Neuf de Roquetaillade.
