Born in Belgium in 1958, Jan Fabre has continued to develop a spirit of total decompartmentalization, even if it sometimes shocks.
Anyone who studied at the School of Decorative Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp ultimately seeks only one thing: to give form, including by emancipating matter through movement.
As a worthy heir to the pioneers of performance, this visual artist, choreographer and director tests the body to better free it. At the end of the 1970s, during his famous performances, he burned money and created drawings with from the ashes. Its themes are rites, beauty, lust and violence.
Jan Fabre became interested in performance art in 1976, painting with his own blood in 1977.
The use of gold in the paintings of the Old Masters is also found in the work of Fabre, more particularly in his works produced in the late 1970s, where he covered himself with copper tacks.
In the 1980s, his work leaned towards the research of the body and its form. His ballpoint pen drawings, known as
, became extremely famous after covering an entire building with a ballpoint pen.
