Giuliana Balbi is an Italian artist who lives and works in Trieste, Italy. She studied at the Istituto Statale d'Arte in her hometown, where she earned a degree in textiles. She explored various artistic fields, moving from photography to painting, through graphic creation and the design of fabrics, papers and jewelry, to arrive at fiber art through experimentation and the use of his personal photo-weaving techniques, thus creating real fabrics. His works have been exhibited in international biennials in Europe, Mexico and Canada, with visits to museums.

The artist evolves in the field of fiber art, a particular sector of artistic expression which has its roots in the textile universe, where the weft and the warp constitute the basic structure. But from this starting point, interpreted in a completely autonomous way, detached from any traditional reference, Giuliana Balbi undertakes her own journey which leads her to approach very varied themes, each time creating indisputable works of art. , while remaining faithful to the fundamental concept of interlacing. From the beginning, she used a technique she called "photo-weaving", in which the weft and the warp are made up of thin strips of photographs (not chosen at random but related to the theme treated) and nylon threads freely knotted, creating a transparent and airy halo of the "fabric" thus formed. This technique was never reduced to a simple technical exercise, but was a metaphor for thoughts and reflections, for psychological considerations resulting from our existential processes.

Currently, her artistic research focuses on the creation of clothing-sculptures which she uses to create installations and which are also used for alternative fashion shows. Giuliana Balbi also teaches the creation of creative and traditional fabrics in different regions of Italy. National and international catalogs document his work.
