The painting was inspired by the Lithuanian myth as well as influenced by the current events in Russia, since the artist was born and raised in Russia.
Vilktakis are werewolves in Lithuanian mythology. One can be either born or become Vilktaki after a sorcerer has cast a spell. One can choose to turn into a Vilktaki by tumbling over a willow stump. People turned into wolves, as legend has it, possess the human mind but they can not speak. Those who became wolves of their own free will are dangerous for the people: they have a bad temper, they steal the neighbor's sheep, quite often openly attack people, inflict mutilation, and sometimes do not deny themselves the pleasure of eating human flesh. In a collection of Lithuanian tales, there is an interesting motif: in order to regain his human form, a werewolf who has turned into a bear or a wolf must kneel motionlessly for a hundred years.
