I travel around Britain and Europe to seek out some of the most scenic towns and villages. I'm fascinated by their architectural marvels, such as The Roman Baths in Bath city centre in England, the ancient city of Gjirokastra in Albania or the famous skyline of Salzburg defined by its impressive buildings. I aim to portray the lively feel as locals and tourists fill popular areas. Other times I focus on one building leaving the surroundings rather suggestive. I'm more likely to set up my easel in a quiet village where I don't get too distracted while painting. I keep my townscapes quite realistic and focus on the main characteristics of the place so that it's instantly recognisable.

I specialise in watercolour landscapes and water reflections have become my favourite subject. I'm spoilt for choice in Britain where I have lived and worked for decades and where I often paint on location. I'm mostly inspired by the British coast, the scenic little harbours, the quaint fishing villages and busy seaside towns as well as other beauty spots such as the unique Lake District with its many lakes and tarns hidden between the mountains. I also produced a number of paintings in my native Hungary where numerous rivers and lakes offer many opportunities to paint on the waterside. I tend to use strong, bright colours to create a romantic and even surreal setting, taking the viewer away from reality and into a calm, dreamy place.

I'm more likely to paint a still life during the cold, dark winter months. I like to combine flowers and fruits which suits perfectly my colourful, loose style. Other times the exciting tonal values of shiny pots and pans or a creased up cloth prompts me to grab my brushes. I aim to create a balanced composition with good colour harmony that catches the viewer's eyes.

Landscape painting is what I specialise in as I love travelling around the world and I often paint or sketch of location. It all started when I set out to travel around Britain or at least to visit some of the most scenic places. Equipped with my sketchbooks I set off on my journey doing little sketches along the way. Then I started painting larger landscapes on my easel. As I gained more confidence, I travelled to other parts of Europe: Spain, Albania, Hungary, Slovakia. I even had the luck to go further afield to countries in Southern Africa where I sketched and sketched. These days I do a lot of studio painting using photos or some of my old sketches. This is due to my condition which affects my vision and so travelling and working outdoors isn't as easy as it used to be. I paint landscapes in various styles although always quite loosely and freely. I prefer to paint peaceful places such as a lakeside and particularly like reflections. I aim to create a harmonious effect and capture a moment of calm.

Flowers are an artist's best friends! I couldn't live in a world without flowers and after the long, dark winter days I'm eagerly waiting for the first blossoms to appear so that I can portray their beauty. First the stars of spring, the bright yellow daffodils, crisp magnolias, tulips, then a feast of colours displayed by delicate poppies, roses, meadow flowers and of course my favourites, waterlilies! Out of all subjects, painting flowers gives me the most freedom and I often experiment with new techniques and colours. It also allows me to create textures. I also try to capture the characteristics of the flowers, such as the delicate nature of poppies.

I enjoyed drawing animals even in my childhood and my very first drawing was penguins in the arctic landscape which I found in my biology book, then came more elaborate animal drawings including our dog. During my art studies I used to visit zoos to draw all the exotic and colourful creatures. My African wildlife paintings were painted during my travels in Southern Africa and on my return between 2015-17. I got inspired not only by the animals in their natural habitat around me but also by the masterful wildlife paintings of local Malawian artist, David Kelly. My wildlife paintings are quite realistic and illustrative, often displaying a typical behaviour of a certain specie.

Here you can see some work done in situ at various locations around the world. I find watercolours the perfect medium to quickly record the ever-changing conditions outdoors. It also allows me to keep my paintings fresh and by doing that capture only the essentials. Working outdoors is fun but it has many challenges. In my case the biggest enemy is the wind. Still, I have adapted to cope with all the elements. During the cold months I work in my studio.

Biography
Ibolya Taligas is a self-taught watercolorist who has been residing in the United Kingdom for the past 30 years. Originally from Hungary where she studied Art and English. She continued her education in London and became an illustrator after finishing her studies. She decided to travel around the UK and seek out some of the areas of outstanding natural beauty. Equipped with her sketchbooks, paints and field easel Ibolya started her watercolour journey, recording all the beauty that surrounded her in the British countryside as well as in famous historic towns. After many years of painting on location she accumulated a large collection of artwork which she decided to exhibit online. To her surprise her humble paintings and sketches, as she calls them, attracted the attention of art collectors worldwide, many of whom became repeat buyers and friends. Ibolya continues to capture peaceful scenes of nature. Her work is displayed in private homes in the USA, UK, Australia, Canada and many EU countries.

Artist Statement
As I begin applying the first layers of watercolour paint onto the paper quite freely, I go on a journey of emotions often evoked by childhood memories of my inseparable bond with nature. Never knowing exactly how the final painting will turn out I travel through my thoughts while defining the tones until I achieve a pleasing visual effect. I aim to trigger the viewer's emotional response in order to connect him/her to the subject, be it landscape, wildlife, botanical or still life.
