Gina Lafont is an artist living in Paris.
An autodidactic artist who believes in an organic evolution of artistic form, Gina has been painting for over 20 years, preferring to cater to private collectors and buyers.
Formerly a marketing executive with liquor giant Pernod-Ricard and with the Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG), she launched and nurtured some of India’s biggest music artists, and worked with some of the most reputed names in international music.
She continues to create exuberant work that is both visually and texturally rich.
“It’s said a picture paints a thousand words, and I prefer to speak through my painting. I suppose the most accurate art theory classification for my method and philosophy of painting at the moment is ‘figurative expressionism’ — but that feels like stuffing it into a box. It goes against the very essence of my artistic ideology of non-definition and fluidity. In fluidity lies freedom and potential and, with reference to the human experience, hope and a future. For me hard definitions, which I think of as a kind of finality, kill the future and end a natural continuous cycle. And yes, for me hard definitions kill and end a painting. When I paint I like to stop where it has life but still leave it boundary-less. My artistic vision comes from the place where, I believe, my spirit meets my psyche and my essence — what I actually consider my fundamental me-ness. This is the part of me that speaks when I quieten everything else: the all-knowing essential part of me that is timeless, and that has allowed me to often paint scenes and moments in the future, sometimes decades away. There is a large spiritual component to my work, which is how I like to connect with my audience. I prefer to connect, in my art, not intellectually or rationally but through the expression of my spirit on canvas. I believe that we all ultimately come from the same place and are made of the same spiritual fabric. So for me this spiritual connection transcends intellectual comprehension and is actually what is most poignant and impactful about art.”
