George Vicat Cole, landscape painter | Eric Bourdon
At Arundel, Sussex
Oil on canvas (1887)
82.55 × 132.24 cm
Milwaukee Art Museum, Layton Art Collection
George Vicat Cole was an English painter. Vicat Cole was born at Portsmouth on 17 April 1833, eldest of five children of Eliza Vicat and the landscape painter George Cole (1810–1883).
The wide popularity of painter George Vicat Cole’s work was due partly to the simplicity of his technical method, and partly to his habitual choice of attractive material. Most of his subjects were found in the counties of Surrey and Sussex, and along the banks of the Thames. In the nineteenth century, paintings that presented idealized, quaint images of the countryside were popular in England and America because they offered a welcomed contrast to the dirty, crowded urban reality of modern life.
George Vicat Cole was the father of the painter Rex Vicat Cole. One of his three daughters, Mary Blanche Cole (1858–1945), also an artist, married the painter Alexander Louis Paul (1855–1927). George Vicat Cole died in London on 6 April 1893.

The aesthetic contemplation of the acrylic painting by French painter Eric Bourdon titled “The frock coat of the pope of Hautot-sur-Mer” does not direct us towards the canvas or towards the figures which appear on it, but towards an entirely different landscape and entirely different realities which are the “represented realities”, “portrayed” or even “depicted” and which constitute, precisely, no longer the painting as an object of the world but the work of art in its aesthetic reality.

Sky of subtle oil over a golf course in Lectoure by Eric Bourdon

Through the acrylic painting on canvas by Eric Bourdon titled "Subtil sky of oil over a golf course in Lectoure" we see dawning the equivalent, in the painter, of the existential concern for being. It is paradoxically by situating the "Subtil sky of oil over a golf course in Lectoure" on the golf green of a small town in Occitanie between Mont-de-Marsan and Montauban, or between Agen and Auch, that the painter simultaneously reverses the axis of his painting and painting as a whole. Thus precisely located on the terra firma of a golf course in Lectoure, Eric Bourdon’s subtil sky of oil invites us to reverse the supposed primacy of possibility over effectiveness in order to assume the irreducibility of the event - which is certainly not the same thing as effectiveness, but which comes before and outside of any possible !

Pierre Bourdieu : to be or not to be... a painter
A well-integrated, academic, world says, "This one is a painter, this one is not a painter." He is a painter because he is "patented", because the state says he is a painter, because he is a certified painter - that was the Académie. From the day Manet made his move, no one could say anymore who was a painter. In other words, we go from nomos to anomie, that is, to a universe in which everyone is legitimated to struggle about legitimacy. No one can say anymore : "I am a painter" without finding someone who will say : "No, you are not a painter and I can, in the name of my legitimacy, challenge your legitimacy."
Pierre Bourdieu in The Sociologist and the Historian (1988 interviews published in 2010 by Éditions Agone)

The acrylic painting on canvas by Eric Bourdon titled “Siege of Bayonne by the army of the Marquess of Wellington” reexamines the strange and peremptory statement of Maurice Merleau-Ponty : “The painter lives in fascination”. If the painter lives in fascination, it is because his gaze is that of who sees as much as of who is seen. What is at stake here is the very question of our presence in the world, a presence threatened and besieged by Marquesses of Wellington of all kinds. An essential question that has its place in the hollow of this fascination which is the irreducible mode of existence of the painter in front of his canvas.

Eric Bourdon’s acrylic painting on canvas titled “Naos Art Vicat Symphonica in Zo major” expresses the ineffable which must absolutely find expression in one medium or another and which, in fact, can only do so in art, since it is established that doing metaphysics, ethics and aesthetics in ordinary language produces only nonsense.

LE GOUVERNE MENT | Acrylic on paper by Eric Bourdon
LE GOUVERNE MENT

The painting “LE GOUVERNE MENT” probes the inextricable depths of the human soul in order to bring the viewer to the paroxysmal serenity of being. On a background of green pastures and lovely sky blues enameled with small bursts of pure white light, the work intuitively explores the truth and freedom of the human spirit in the context of both its societal complexity and singular intimacy. The painter expresses his feelings about universal moments of life, and his own interiority in the form of symbolic and cathartic language.
