Née le 25 novembre 1945 à São Paulo, Brésil, Katia Maria de Carvalho Krebs a suivi une formation commerciale. Arrivée à Zurich en 1979, elle y vit jusqu'en 1985. Après séjournée au Brésil, elle est en Romandie dès fin 1990. Vers la fin de la décennie entame des études de beaux-arts à l'Académie Maximilien de Meuron et chez M.Robert Tilbury à Neuchâtel, puis à Lyon atelier M. Gérard Dubois et à Genève atelier Mme Catherine Bourlet.
Cours avec peintres Armusik, David Gray, Kristy Gordon, Nelson Ferreira, Costanza Papasogli, Academy of Old Masters.
L’artiste expose notamment en Europe dès 2004.

VENISE AUTREMENT…
Pour sa première exposition, Katia de Carvalho a choisi de montrer des vues de Venise. A priori, cela laisse songeur tant les interprétations de la ville de la lagune sont innombrables. Alors en quoi celles de Katia de Carvalho différent-elles des autres ? Et bien la réponse est simple. Elles portent toutes la sensibilité de l’Amérique du Sud, du Brésil plus précisément, pays d’origine de l’artiste. Ceci leur confère une luminosité particulière ainsi qu’une chromatique spécifique.
Tout en rendant hommage aux architectes des doges, l’artiste apporte sa touche personnelle, son regard empreint d’une certaine naïveté à l’égard des lignes et de la composition, ses couleurs accrues. Il découle de cela des instants de pure poésie qui éclairent des tableautins carrés réalisés à l’huile à la manière des Anciens.
Deux cultures convergent et de leur rencontre naissent des œuvres où la primauté de la ville est rejointe par l’exubérance du cœur et des sentiments.
Si Venise elle-même est née de la rencontre de l’Orient et de l’Occident, les tableaux que Katia de Carvalho a peints y apportent le souffle du Nouveau Monde. Ce mélange culturel témoigne qu’en fonction de ses racines, les regards portés sur des objets se nourrissent de traditions ancrées dans les gènes. Ceci doit faire réfléchir et laisser penser que les images même de notre quotidien peuvent être perçues autrement selon les fondements de nos éducations, sans pour autant que des jugements ou une échelle de valeurs puissent être émis.
En regardant cette « Venise », il faut laisser voyager son imagination sans retenue.

L'histoire secrète de Katia Carvalho

La mémoire et l'imagination sont les deux vecteurs de base qui alimentent la peinture
par Katia Carvalho. Le souvenir dans sa peinture n'apparaît que comme des sensations visuelles et de la nostalgie, comme s'il s'agissait de l'axe caché qui a structuré sa vie. Elle se souvient des couleurs, des mouvements rythmiques, des taches réparties dans l'espace, des tons que le ciel de son enfance abritait. Et l'imagination n'est rien d'autre que l'histoire que votre cœur composait au cours d'une vie qui semblait éloignée de votre sensibilité. Comme une chanson, l'artiste compose, jour après jour, l'univers lyrique et simple que son âme désire. La nostalgie, la douleur de la terre absente, pourrait être attribuée au fait que Katia Carvalho a vécu à l'étranger pendant longtemps. Mais d'autres artistes, qui n'ont pas quitté leur patrie, affichent souvent ce même désir doux-amer. Mario Quintana a refait le sujet du célèbre poème de Gonçalves Dias, "Canção do Exílio", et a décrit sa condition comme un fils ingrat qui manque sa terre sans jamais la quitter. La terre d'un artiste n'est connue que de lui, une portion perdue et rendue en éclair, du Paradis. Katia Carvalho travaille sur ces deux vecteurs, la mémoire et l'imaginaire, de manière directe et objective, créant des images apparemment simples, déconnectées du contexte intellectuel et théorique de l'art actuel. C'est ce qui donne à ce tableau un aspect émotionnel et naïf. Dans ce tableau, il n'y a pas de discours sur le temps et l'espace, il n'est pas élaboré sur des plans ou des relations chromatiques. Et il n'y a aucune mention des civilisations mythiques et totémiques, un vrai dieu qui commandait des sectes artistiques féroces. C'est simple, Katia Carvalho s'occupe d'un univers fait d'émotions et de nostalgie d'une terre inconnue et fixe ces images sur toile dans une sorte de note de sa vraie vie psychique. Artiste de révélation tardive, Katia Carvalho a connu une reconnaissance inattendue, peut-être de l'empathie du public lorsqu'elle a reconnu ces mêmes fragments paradisiaques.

La peinture de Katia de Carvalho reste suspendue entre la vérité et la fiction : trop réelle pour être une dérivation de la phantasie, elle est, cependant, extraite du phénoménique par des licenses anatomiques et de perspective, qui résultent d’une vision de rêverie (irreélle), avec des lignes naïves, de la nature, de la cité et de l’homme.
L’artiste, d’origine brésilienne, s’éloigne exprès de la narration chronologique et de la contemporanéité ; elle peint retournant son regard vers le passé, commençant par la technique : elle prépare la base avec un soin méticuleux, et utilise la couleur couche par couche, avec une patiente répétition, tellement innocente et totale que l’a main d’une petite fille qui peigne sa poupée favorite.
La séquence des travaux de Katia de Carvalho est sous-divisible en deux grandes areas thématiques : les vues urbaines et les images rurales. À Vénise l'artiste s'est dévouée à plusieurs travaux, qui reproduisent des façades des palais étendus comme des draps entre l'air et l'eau, arabesque bidimmensionel declaré dans la total évidence de leur nom, comme se la toile était la toponomie libre d'une étudiante d'architecture.
Contrairement à tout ce qui arrive dans des chez d'oeuvres des "vedutistis", qui viennent tout de suite à nos pensées, Vénise ne sert pas comme une scenario pour la célébration de la vie et du pouvoir : les œuvres perdent la perspective de jeux de prestige, il leur manque l’accent “goldoniano”, folklorique. C’est plutôt la référence à une leçon de Monet, retournant à des sujets identiques sous des lumières differentes, et à des moments differents de la journée.
L’artiste est en train de chercher son propre repertoire iconographique, et nous offre une cité vue à partir de l’eau, au lieu d’une cité de places et “campielli” (?). Les bâtiments, peints avec des couleurs vivides, perdent leur poids et son devenus des scenarios de rêve et de mémoire. La vue est, pour Kátia de Carvalho, un portrait imaginé : l’effet est étrange, car qui le regarde en avant/devant lui (?) voit la précision d’une dentelle, exquise, de la verité architecturale, mais cette vérité est contredite, ou mieux, privée, du nivellement des raccourcis, pour légèrement recouvrir les fuites.
Comme quelques parts de la réalité étaient apportées du loin, où les lois de l’espace et ses représentations étaient différentes, quand comparées à celles de notre lieu commun.
Dans la toile, où l’artiste peint des scènes rurales avec des blanchisseuses près des rivages, la même sensation est répétée, bien qu’avec une rejection semantique, une sensation identique. Les femmes représentées sons des filles anonymes de la mémoire, et ici aussi la qualité du rêve exempte l’artiste de l’anatomie et de la perspective de la vérité. Ce qui importe est de revenir aux couleurs, à la calme et le panica e la sensation irrésistible de la nature brésilienne, l’aura d’un passé distant, maintenant eloigné aussi geographiquement. Plutôt la precision des arts et les raccourcis peut-être prive la scène du savour des fables qui la contresignent et la caractérisent. Car surtout, Katia de Carvalho fait, quand elle paint : elle raconte des fables, elle retient ce qu’elle se rappelle des histoires mythiques et distantes de “une fois...”, et les colore avec son experience "J'ai déjà vu, une fois..."
La pacification entre l’homme et l’environnement (à partir de la vue urbaine, precedant cette phase-ci, on ne trouve pas aucun trace de figure humaine) se succède dans le signal de recupération de ses propres racines, dans le lit de rivière de sa commemoration journalière et intime d’un paysage qui montre une manière de vivre et d’être.
Au fond de soi-même, dans "son” passé, dans “son” pays, Katia de Carvalho a retrouvé comment parler de l’homme, à partir du point de recommencer à le peindre.
Et l’homme, maintenant représenté dans des moments de joie et felicité, clarifie la polarité de l’active et du passive, que, en retrospect, aussi lui (=lhe) jette une nouvelle interpretation de sa production passée. Les bâtiments Vénitiens étaient des places défendus, diaphragmes tendus, entre lesquels, et dedans lesquels, l’existence même a été consommée, et au-déhors, elle vive en secret ; maintenant, les lumières des palais sont allumées, les sessions de dance sont ouvertes, les notes musicales ont envahi l’air, la joie est communiquée à chaque goutte des chandeliers, elle a impregné chaque centimètre de plâtre des murs.
La fête commence. C’est le carnaval de confetti et giravolte (?) pirouettes et dances. Mais ici aussi, il y a quelqu’un qui observe, et quelqu’un qui est observé. Il y a aussi, une figure qui s’offre à l’observation d’autres personnes au salon, et qui se protège et se maintient dans son intime. Qui jouit de la fête, qui se s’écarte d’elle plus passivement, ou orne la scène comme les collonnes e “paraste”, les fenêtres et les chandeliers. L’essence de la peinture de Katia de Carvalho est théâtrale. Une peinture qui a des racines dans l’antinomie de l’art Venitienne des années 700, dans l’expression somptueuse de Canaletto et dans le noyau minutieux de Longhi, mais qui arrive entierement à la figure personnelle, car elle a été réalisée par le fil de la mémoire.
Également dans des toiles récentes, l’artiste demeure fidèle à sa manière de travailler “per campiture” (?) et aux successives plans de couleurs : de cette manière, comme si elle donnait la définition au rêve. Devenant la vision toujours plus claire et plus définie. Comme si elle habillait la toile avec la couleur. Et la couleur est, certainement, le composant technique auquel l’artiste fait plus d’attention, tant à la proposition qu’à l’épaisseur et aux titres.
Mais la récente série des dances du salon offre aussi un autre point: l’artiste, toujours attentive à l’organization d’une composition qui favorise le rythme horizontal et frontal, semble suivre les choreographies et des rires d’un group de personnes, qui retourne en tours à la toile, et qu’elle attrape à nouveau, comme si ses yeux était une machine à capturer; il est, peut-être, une oeuvre en série pour créer des séquences d’images (de la même manière que la séquence des blanchisseuses, capturées dans leurs allées et venues, et arrêts), mais cette insistence à proposer des caractères identiques dans de differentes positions me semble être connectées une fois plus avec la qualité de la mémoire de la peinture de Kátia de Carvalho: il s’agit, finalement, d’organizer la mémoire dans le temps, en la transformant dans une narration consistente. Il me semble que cette modalité est destinée au dévelopement des solutions originales, et d’autres.

Description de ma démarche artistique
Venise, la singularité de son histoire et la beauté de son site m’ont attirée comme maints peintres – et la série est devenu un exercice de couleurs.
Ensuite, les toiles « les lavandières » - une plongée dans les eaux fraîches de nos envies « d’air pur», de nature – l’éveil des sens à la vue et la contemplation des paysages auxquels il est donné à l’homme de notre époque d’y accéder (encore)
Je suis une artiste à l’aise dans son univers intérieur – le monde extérieur est le monde d’autres gens, leur réalité est celle qu’eux l’ont construite – mes toiles lorgnent une réalité harmonieuse oú chacun est content de vivre, peut-être irréelle pour ceux qui ne rêvent jamais.
je vois la beauté des villes, riches d’histoire de l’humanité oú l’amour du beau était bien prononcé, bien visible, et cette « lecture » facile était si vive, si vraie que personne ose nier encore de nos jours.
