Biography

Eric Bourdon was born in Lille, France, in 1979.

After studies in science and philosophy Eric Bourdon came back to drawing and painting in 1998, his very first passion from childhood.

Eric Bourdon's works have in common vivid colors and unpremeditated pencil strokes, expressive of raw enthusiasm in the "art brut" or "Outsider Art" manner. Paul Masquelier, a critic for the controversial French review Eléments, has pointed out the narcissistic or regressive aspects of his paintings, while conceding their social commentary and the feeling of joie de vivre they convey.

However, the core of Eric Bourdon's artistic practice is elsewhere. Bicha, an art gallery in London, outlined it as follows: "Eric's work is more drawing than painting. It is a game with lines, first drawned in a spontaneous manner, random – much like a child doodling – then worked and reworked again and again until something new, a precise figure, character, emerges from this chaos. Always newness created from the nothingness. No character ever appears twice."

Indeed, Eric Bourdon's work is all about "improv drawing", as one can see on videos showing the artist drawing on a white board. In 2009, Samantha Deman, critic for the French information website about contemporary art 'Arts Hebdo | Medias' (created by the team at the former 'Cimaise' paper magazine) was enthusiastic after seeing the results in painting: "His universe is merry and fanciful, the stroke, spontaneous, has a great time on the canvas, virtuoso of the line, curves and arabesques, until the bright and luminous colours burst onto the scene and repossess it. Eric Bourdon bends kind monsters into shape who glide gracefully among a faun of individuals whose silhouettes are of the most amazing, plump or lanky, always infinitly sympathetic and delighted to come to stimulate our dormant child souls." Eric Bourdon - Painter, Sketch artist

(Catalog of the exhibition-sale Solid'Art 2017 in Lille, France)

Eric Bourdon is a man with no story to tell, and a sketch artist without technique.

Every day (like every painting) is a new beginning ! For him, improvisation is the only rule of the game, it is at the heart of artistic activity.

Bringing out colorful emotions and folkloric characters from a few lines drawn “without thinking”, is to cultivate graphic creativity at its most basic level.

Scribbler by profession, Eric Bourdon only tries to shed light on the creative wealth of chance and accident, and to reveal their inexhaustible potential when it comes to creating a myriad of creatures… that we would have never thought of !

Eric Bourdon - Cheerful delirium

An article by Samantha Deman for ArtsHebdoMedias.com (Oct 16, 2009), online magazine successor to the contemporary art review CIMAISE :

His universe is merry and fanciful, the stroke, spontaneous, has a great time on the canvas, virtuoso of the line, curves and arabesques, until the bright and luminous colours burst onto the scene and repossess it.

Eric Bourdon bends kind monsters into shape who glide gracefully among a faun of individuals whose silhouettes are of the most amazing, plump or lanky, always infinitly sympathetic and delighted to come to stimulate our dormant child souls.

What he can't express by means of pictorial art, the young artist translates it by the language of the words - he is the author of a novel and several essays of a philosophical nature -, or exteriorizes it through his own body, put into scene during performances very close to the body-painting; a discipline at the border between the figurative and the symbolic system, vast space of creativity favourable to his research conducted from reality. “ It is the greatest freedom of expression I can obtain with the body ”, he emphasizes.

Acrylic paintings by Eric Bourdon

Gallery of acrylic paintings by French painter Eric Bourdon, contemporary artist in Lille, France. The creations of self-taught artist Eric Bourdon are almost more drawing than painting. It is a game with lines, first drawn in a spontaneous manner, random, much like a child doodling, made with chalk or acrylic paint. The lines are then worked, and reworked again and again, until something new, a precise figure, a character, emerges from this chaos. Each time, a new meaning comes to life from the nothingness. Using a few improvised strokes, Eric Bourdon shapes all new and fascinating characters in a pop style, symbolic and full of joy, emotions and colors.
