Les spéculations curatoriales et académiques fantaisistes, et les sur-interprétations arbitraires des œuvres d’art, peuvent être des exemples d’idiotie intellectuelle comme ceux qui sont disséqués de manière amusante par Roger Kimball dans 'Le Viol des Maîtres' ('The Rape of the Masters'). Kimball prend comme épigraphe le dicton bien connu de l’évêque Butler, de 1726, qui dit que « Chaque chose est ce qu’elle est et rien d’autre ». Toute œuvre, considérée d’un point de vue sémiotique, est un « texte », un message qui a été construit dans toutes sortes de mediums et qui peut être typographique, oral ou visuel par nature. Ce qui nous amène à cette indiscutable conclusion : Rien de ce qui n’est pas vivant ne peut être art, et rien de ce qui ne peut être art ne peut être vrai.

Fanciful academic and curatorial speculations, and arbitrary over-interpretation of works of art, can be examples of intellectual siliness such as those amusingly dissected by Roger Kimball in 'The Rape of the Masters'. Kimball takes as his epigraph the well-known saying of Bishop Butler, from 1726, that "Everything is what it is and not another thing". Every artwork, considered from a semiotic point of view, is a "text", a message that has been constructed in any medium and may be typographic, oral or visual in nature. That brings us to this indisputable conclusion : Nothing which is not alive can be art, and nothing which cannot be art can be true.

Note : original acrylic painting on extra strong drawing paper with grain Carte d'Art 340g by Sennelier (D340). The 20x20cm square of paper is glued to a piece of quality cardboard of the same dimensions. Total thickness : 3mm.
