WASTE - first stage
39 Boris Street
„Waste - first stage” is not only a contradictory paraphrase of the pedagogical methods to teach the realization of Still Lives, but it is also a personal system through which household items are translated into the language of abstraction. Relying on conventional painting techniques and operating with consumer objects, I am searching, at the border of the imperceptible world, for that flashing life within objects, that pulsation or stillness, that intermediate life between animal and object, that shadow or that reflection, "that mysterious element which is animal a few hours of the day and only under the action of light "(Odilon Redon," Journal ").
It all started with the need to make sure that all the constellations of small things around me did not go unnoticed and undocumented. The things that interest me are recruited based on their ability to be deformed, fragmented, broken, extended, torn apart, modified, in order to be then combined, joined, stitched, trimmed or spray painted and transformed into a shapeless mass . These objects have several features: on one hand, they represent a mnemonic route, a junction between past and present (they practically compose an invisible diary from September 2012 - March 2013, although many of these objects date from periods prior to my biography), a container of every recyclable particle that has been found in my home during this period. Things of all kinds: found, discarded, used, deteriorated, forgotten. Packaging, electronics, clothes, bottles, tetrapacks, bags, pieces, heads, parts. However, it is not these which interest me, but the operations around them, from their selection to their use as a perceptual reference.
The longer lasts the binding of these corpses of debris, the more intense is my relationship with the future objects, and the greater is my ability to synthesize the future inanimate arrangements. There is a relationship of physical and emotional closeness established between me and these pseudo-mutants, which installs "a strange complicity between these objects, as they would imply mysterious meanings while being displayed (...) and filling the imagined space of the painting " (Roger Fry, about Cézanne's still lives). This leads to a phenomenon of delirious autoscopie, which approaches me to the internal line I seek in my paintings.

I recently fell in the lust of cadmium orange and this coincided, not accidentally, with my relocation to the countryside, in full explosion of the green. What interested me in these artworks was a violence of the sensation, "a static or potential violence, a violence of reaction and expression" (Gilles Deleuze in "Francis Bacon: The logic of sensation")
Naming the paintings after the actual pigment most used in their realization, namely cadmium orange, I wanted to point out a proximity, from far away, to Matisse. In his essay "The glory of pure violence. Matisse's War", J. M. Bernstein writes:
"Pictorially the same suspension of classical drawing that he (Matisse) had carried out in the dance pictures is already carried out by nature in flowing vines and leaves, that that kind of vegetable form itself institutes a pictoral line".

"TERRE FERME"
rue Daniel Constantin nr. 3, sector 1, Bucarest
During this year, through my thesis projects "Dust", „Transmographies” and „Mummifications” I decided to put sticks in my own wheels – so to say, by thematically and technically restricting myself, in order to gain „the ability of rational control over the sensoriallity of pictorial material " (Henri Focillon,"Life of forms"). I think the importance lies in the creative process, but my work is just as much about the finished product. The purpose behind these works is to explore the expressive properties of paint and other materials through mostly physical and poetic processes, turning them into something edged with spirit. They stand as the result of experiments in between the field of painting, printmaking, aerography, collage and sculpture.
The “Dust” (in romanian, the project's title „ŢĂRÂNĂ” is much more related to the earth materia in its solid form) project's compositions are comprised of hieratic figures who lack spirit and are trapped in a kind of spherical torn. With its formal anthropomorphic and zoomorphic approach, “Dust” is also sensorially situated in between the humane and the animalic. The characters which populate the space of these works are emphasized precisely by their lack of individuality: elongated figures with bodies and limbs fanning around, as if drifting into the surroundings. They are ordinary bodies centred around the suppressed memories or half-forgotten intimacies that are personal and at the same time as individual to each of us. It is a silent violence, emanating from figures that cannot walk, see or speak.
The “Transmographies” are acrylics transfers of mono prints, hidden under many layers of paint, varnish, airbrush and scratches. The monotypes are based on ink sketches created in moments of sudden extended perplexity, as a rupture that allows me to escape from myself: most often during my travels, in buses, in crowded places, in the corner of the rooms, without light, etc. These compositions actually have no figurative counterpart in the actual real event that may have determined them.
The „Mummifications” sculptures are the result of a transubstantiation and identification with various alterities. They are based on a found object (a pan, a fan, old chairs, etc..), which suffers a sort of “mummification” process. I use this term not in relation to the adhesive or various materials that embalm the object, but in relation to the "twinning spell", to the projection into something else. It follows the original object's skeleton disappearance, all the initial details being devoured by a final uniform color and many layers of Damar.
The investigative basis consists of “catching” the state of inner chaos, which seems to accompany the creative self when it “erupts”, followed by a very rational creative process, which is antithetical to this “eruption”.
This video re-translates abstractly the sensory phenomena of a performance taken along with 9 other artists at "Ecole d'art de Grenoble", in France. The idea came after the initial form has been implemented, which I found an interesting way of working process. You can find more about it here : http://maiastefanaoprea.wordpress.com/

"Bucharest, Roadblock" was filmed in Grenoble, France, December 2010-January 2011.
The space that I cross every day is lost within the memory of my childhood town, Bucharest, Romania. I created an imaginary map of Bucharest linking the places I've frequented over in my past (more precisely during the university year 2009-2010). The superposition of this imaginary map on the real map of Bucharest, and then on the map of the city I currently live in, Grenoble (keeping the exact scale and the common point of my home), will generate a route that combines my usual notions of movement with the new location . Walking on this road I seal with tape all elements that are the subject of my own territory. The tape becomes a metaphor for the memory of an imaginary space that I trace in real space.

MAIA ŞTEFANA OPREA – Des Jeux Serieux apropos de l'effroi
Ecrivain : Florin Toma
