We have a wide selection of artwork about the ancient world. Our collection includes paintings, sculptures, and other works that depict scenes from history. You’ll find pieces depicting everything from Greek mythology to Roman gods and goddesses to famous battles throughout time. If you love history, we have something for everyone!
Old age is traditionally considered a discreet phase in Europe and North America. It begins in approximately 3000 BC, which corresponds with the first towns of Mesopotamia, the unification of Egypt, the use of bronze (the alloy of tin and copper) to produce weapons and instruments, and the oldest known current writing (cuneiform and hieroglyphs).
Date of starting around 3,000 BC, which is the period for which we have written evidence, is the beginning of the historical era. Prehistoric (literally, "before history") is the preceding period. The prehistoric era in Egypt and the Near East covers the Stein Ages, but not necessarily in other regions. For instance, before the later Iron Age France (Gaul) acquired a writing system. Other, more isolated locations have not adopted any writing system until after the fall of the Roman Empire.
The difference between the end of prehistory and the beginning of ancient history is ambiguous. It also has an uncertain ending date. The antiquity gave way to Europe in the Middle Ages, but the end of the old world and the beginning of the medieval is difficult to pinpoint accurately. Rome's fall in 476 AD was considered the conventional end of the old period; nevertheless, Rome was by that time hardly the superpower it once was. In the first half of the second century AD, at least in the West, the disintegration of the Roman Empire began and can even be traced back to the instability Marcus Aurelius sought to stop.
But again, things are not clear-cut: while in the west the Roman Empire was eventually divided into a number of smaller kingdoms that later forged great political entities under kings like Charlemagne, the empire managed to persist and flourish even in the east. The people of the Byzantine Empire, even though Greek was the language Franca in the realm, considered themselves "Roman." They maintained their now fully Christianized civilization until Constantinople came down in 1453, under the hands of the Turks.
