Abstractionism, also known as abstract art, emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a response to the traditional representational art forms that had dominated Western art for centuries.

The origins of abstractionism can be traced back to the post-impressionist movements of the late 19th century, particularly the work of artists like Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne, who sought to depict the world in a more subjective and expressive way.

The first truly abstract paintings were created by Wassily Kandinsky in the early 1910s. Kandinsky believed that art should be a spiritual expression, and that abstract forms and colors could convey emotions and ideas in a way that realistic representations could not.

Other artists, such as Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian, also embraced abstractionism, creating works that focused on geometric shapes and the interplay of colors and forms.

Abstractionism gained popularity in the early 20th century, particularly among artists associated with the Bauhaus movement and the De Stijl group. These artists sought to create art that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing, using abstract forms and colors to create designs for everything from furniture to architecture.

During the mid-20th century, abstractionism continued to evolve, with artists like Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko creating large-scale abstract works that emphasized emotion and gesture over formal composition.

Today, abstractionism remains an important and influential art form, with artists continuing to explore new forms of abstraction and new ways of expressing the human experience through color, shape, and form.
