Tired of the same old art? Looking for something new and exciting?
Smiley has been an icon of popular culture since the 1970s. From psychedelic t-shirts to acid house music, the happy face has become synonymous with optimism and happiness.
When the smiley first appeared in America, it was a simple design, not yet copyrighted by anyone. The design - of two dots and a line - was created by New York advertising artist Harvey Ball for the State Mutual Life Assurance Company.
But when Hallmark owners Bernard and Murray Spain took the idea and made it their own, it became an international phenomenon that has spawned millions of licensed products across the globe. Its enduring appeal is testament to its ability to transcend the limitations of a single design and become an iconic symbol that embodies optimism in the face of adversity.
The Smiley was one of the first emojis, a simplified representation of a smiling face that can be used to express emotions when communicating on mobile phones. In the late 1990s, Japanese phone companies began developing sets of pictures that were designed to look like different emojis when users were text chatting.
To create a smiley, users simply release the Alt key on their keyboard. Once they've done that, they can copy and paste a white smiley face anywhere in their computer.
Taking care of your smiley is important to ensure that it heals properly and does not become infected. A smiley piercing can take up to 4 weeks to heal completely, and it's best to use a saline solution or table salt dissolved in water twice a day for cleaning.
