Despite the tense political climate in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balkan painters continue to produce vibrant works of art. Their artistic expressions focus on the reality of life, revealing poignant data about society.
Throughout the region, a new expressionism movement is emerging. This expressionism, which focuses on the reality of the society and its problems, strives to make art that is representative for the Balkan area.
This art can be found on walls in the region’s museums, as well as on the covers of books and newspapers. The resulting paintings and sculptures portray the harsh conditions of everyday life, which often include war, economic crisis and social issues.
Artists of Serbia and Yugoslavia were influenced by western European painting styles, such as Fauvism and Cubism. Some of these artists chose to emigrate from Yugoslavia and work in Europe, while others continued to paint in their home country.
A prominent example is the painter Nasta Rojc, who was a major proponent of the Zagreb Color School. She painted a series of portraits, as well as landscapes and abstracts.
Another famous artist from the area was Vera Dajht-Kralj, who also painted landscapes, as well as portraits. She was a member of the Zagreb Color School and advocated for gender equality in painting.
The Serbian artistic scene split into two distinct groups based on their style of work and their commitment to tradition. While many Serbian painters were devoted to re-creating the ancient frescos and iconography, others explored international styles such as Surrealism.
