This is oil-on-canvas in thick impasto. This is oil-on-canvas in thick impasto. I tried to capture the indignation one feels about the unworthiness of war, as this is a house among those burnt and damaged in the infamous Zamboanga Siege between the Military and Moro rebels, in Zamboanga City, year 2013. I tried to affect our emotion about the victim/family that once inhabited this dwelling that now stands empty, ravaged by a pointless war.

But aside from the coldness of the content that I tried to convey, I am also considerably interested about the form and color of the subject, finding it very ‘painterly’. The white grids that I used to initially sketch the drawing were left unerased, spared, and integrated intentionally to be part of the composition. I mean these grids as metaphor to man's possessiveness, how he measures everything for his advantage, which is often the root cause of war.

To create pictures that evoke "meaningfulness" is Edwin Jumalon's constant goal in his art practice.
His painting is shaped through various juxtaposition of images within a single work- images he culls from memory, the internet, mags, his own photographs and drawings. He builds up the work randomly, inventing visual narratives by combining disparate images from local myths, life events and personal history. He blends and extends the journey of these forms toward their final painted 'destination'.
Through integration, balancing and filtering of eclectic symbols, the artist creates layered narratives and metaphors in his paintings; paintings that evoke rather than describe.
