The Pyrenees Mountains divide Spain and France. As an Australian I found these ranges rather awesome in their towering peaks and sheer ruggedness and beauty. What I found so contrasting is the difference betweeb the Spanish and French sides of the range. So much more snow falls on the French side, making it impossible for the trees to grow, creating bare slopes, whereas the Spanish side is highly forrested. The rugged stratified rock formations have always held a fascination for me as they demonstrate the enormous upheaval which has taken place in order to form these mountains.
