Jaroslav Svoboda came into contact with glassmaking at an early age, in the grinding workshop of his father, who worked for the Inwald glass factory in Poděbrady. As the head of the glass smelter in Škrdlovice, he intensively took care of the technical development of the glassworks, but caring for the artistic level of the smelter's production seemed equally important to him. Through glass symposia, he invited leading glass makers to cooperate. But when it seemed to him that this cooperation was bearing fruit in the developing mastery of the workers in the glass factory, but it was not manifesting itself much in ordinary production, he set about designing extensive collections of table and decorative objects for the Škrdlovice smelter with great vigor. At the same time, he tried to revive already neglected techniques and looked for ways to use the unconventional combination of technical and artistic concepts both in design and in free creation. After 1990, Jaroslav Svoboda fulfilled his dream when he opened his own glass factory in Karlov.
