My husband did a research paper for social linguistics. He identified a variety of non-verbal communications between people just by their dress that might identify age, occupation, religion, political views, status, etc. He was curious about public interactions when these social semaphores were absent. He visited several nudist clubs interviewing members and guests. He found there was no longer presumptuous characterizations or subtle discriminations. Children dived for change at the bottom of the pool. Elderly couples would idly float with water wings about their arms. Young people laughed and played volleyball. Older men threw horseshoes. Women entertained shuffleboard. Everyone lying in the sun using first names only. There were beautiful bodies, others worn, and some even scarred like mine. It didn't seem to matter. Pleasant afternoons of "The Bathers" by Cezanne.

Early into my marriage, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy. The healing that followed over the next year was more emotional than physical. The struggle to stand naked before a mirror and feel within myself as a woman... whole. I used to idly sketch on a drawing pad through the afternoons to pass the time. Nothing serious. But my husband one day suggested returning to school. Study fine arts. I enrolled in a small local university with a focus at first upon drawing, then broadened out to printmaking. I completed a BFA, then later attended graduated school for art education to teach. I would work with inner-city elementary children throughout the day, and afterwards climb the stairs of an old warehouse to my studio. I'd begin laying out the materials that I needed, while waiting for the model to arrive.
