Artist Statement

I long to create, not replicate.

I aim to be visually disruptive.

I am an Impact Impressionist.

“I love that amazing bonhomie that exists in the creative and spontaneous gang of human, paint, brush and canvas, performing on the studio stage. My USC’s take the thrill so much further. Each Painting is an adventure, far exceeding the same journey on a flat canvas.” BR

Name: Brian Rogers

Artist name: BR

Studio Residence:  The coastal village of Port Alfred, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Motto: Create don’t replicate

Unique: No evidence can be found that any other artist has ever created exclusively on shaped canvas. My Unique Structured Canvases are inimitable. They are both painting and sculpture.

Current: All my USC’s were conceived and created in 2021.

I insist on calling myself self-educated and not self-taught. I sort out the most compatible art guides - guides help you grow, teachers teach what they know; I honed my craft, my personal style under their guidance; I research and I research and I research; I draw inspiration from artists whose work has no resemblance, even in subject matter to mine.

Artistic influencers and why?

Every living or deceased artist is an inspiration. Seek and ye shall find.

Irma Stern. It was in Irma Stern's portraiture that I discovered my creative variance as, to me, she was the first (unacknowledged) impact impressionist.

JH Pierneef. Simply the way Pierneef treated his landscape sky is his greatest motivator for me. Nobody, but nobody has dared emulate it...and if you ask an art academic about his sky style, I bet you get a made up answer. Please, go look across his work and you will be re astounded by his skill in impressionism.

William Kentridge: He created. he broke new ground in art, like the Beatles broke new ground on the guitar.

Winslow Homer: This man could create drama in the simplest settings and bestowed his great craft on the creations. Homer is my future growth point.

Picasso. Its a cliché inspiration dog tag of course, of but there it is. The mans art blows my mind. His creativity communicates with kings and paupers alike.  And his pioneering spirit was a blessing to man kind.

Anon. I have an unsigned still life painting by an 11 year old which will forever be in daily sight. Its proof that great art does not get recognized.
